Can I use a product (page) image as a featured image on collection page? I am wondering if this duplication of image within the site is fine in terms of SEO?

Your question lacks clarity but if I were going to use the
same image twice, for SEO purposes, I would name it
    something different.

So if it is a picture of some flowers in a vase I would
    name the first one

    roses-in-a-vase-on-table.jpg

and the second use of it

    red-roses-in-glass-vase-on-pedestal.jpg

This is just an example. Use keywords for your images.

It is good to edit and change some elements in the image and avoid using duplicate images. From my point of view, It is good for SEO to use different images with different posts or for web pages.

    All ridiculous answers ...

Of course you can use the same image on a category page as you do as the main image on the product page. It is the main image, after all, which is what you would naturally show on ANY page that refers to that product.

Every single shopping cart software that I know of automatically uses your product page main image as the image on category pages.

This concept of "duplicate content" is starting to get ridiculous. Not only does Google not penalize you for duplicate images, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A DUPLICATE CONTENT PENALTY! It has never existed. If you are relying on any source that claims there is such a thing, PLEASE FIND A NEW GURU TO FOLLOW!

Yes, you can, but Ensure the image is highly relevant, use unique alt text for each context, and optimize the image for fast loading. If image is relevant and optimized with unique, keyword-rich alt text and captions it will not harm you in any way.

Interesting query about using product page images as featured images on collection pages! subtitleedit has been great for organizing and refining my content related to e-commerce.

Yeah, it's okay to use the same product image on a collection page. Just make sure the image fits both pages well.

Google likes it when images are unique, but it's not a big deal as long as they make sense where they're used. Adding good alt text will help too.
