This may seem like a stupid question...

But I was curious as to whether or not it is a good idea to set up an authority blog pertaining to a broad version of the niche I am focusing in.

IE: If I am focusing on a lot of home improvement niches, should I start up a "home improvement" blog and post to it on a regular basis, build steady back links as I work on my other projects; that way in a year I have a somewhat decent authority based niche related site to shoot back links to my other project sites for quality links and quick indexing?

This would be a good idea if you can get traffic to your authority blog. To build it just to get the backlinks would not be worthwhile - you would be better off with article marketing. At least that's my opinion.

I would work it in the other direction. Use your other little sites as backlinks for your authority site.

Alright, just trying to figure out a good structure for my long term business plan.
Ultimately I would like to have 2 authority sites that I build up over the course of a couple of years. One dealing with a specific of the electronics niche, and one dealing in the make money online niche. Gradually build links to them on a consistent basis, and let them gain a reputation and high traffic before even thinking about monetizing them.

In the mean time, as I build up my authority sites, I was going to go the route of the informative adsense approach to start building up seed money and get a hold of SEO techniques.

This is where the blogs come in, I was thinking about building up a blog solely to for back links and quick indexing for my micro niche adsense sites. Now, I would post quality content to my blog, and probably not go the route of trying to monetize it unless it really picks up heavy traffic. The premise would be that whenever I launch a new adsense site, I post a niche specific post to my blog linking to my adsense site, resulting in a back link, and more importantly a quick index. Now is this something that can be effective? Or does it sound like a waste of time?

      ----------------------------------------

On a different note, one more thing I noticed as I have been launching my adsense sites, I have been doing a lot of analyzing of the competition who are following the same basic principles, simply to get an idea of techniques people are using.

As a result, I have noticed a lot of the the mini niche sites that are around a month or two old often times have hundreds of back links coming from a single blog.

In going to these blogs I noticed that under the "blogroll" entry of the blog that the URLs of some of the sites I was analyzing were listed; resulting in a new back link to the site whenever a new post was made to the blog.
Can anyone confirm that this is something that is done, or am I mistaken? If so; is it effective/"legal"?

Sorry about the long post, hopefully someone will be able to sift through all of my babble.
