Can someone please help understand how Adword Groups work?

I am very interested in PPC and have been studying it for quite some time, thing is, I really don't understand how Adgroups work.
I get that you group similar keywords in one ad group, but what I don't understand is what happens next? When someone types in the a variation of that keyword, does a different ad come up?
Example: If I choose the keywords:

- Seo
- Seo Marketing
- Seo Help
And I put them in an ad group and someone types in the word "Seo Marketing", does the same ad come up for that keyword as it would for "Seo" and "Seo Help" or do the ads vary depending on which combination of keywords are typed in? Also, do you have to create different ads depending the variation of the keyword that is typed in?
I hope this is not too confusing, I just don't understand this part of it.
