Adsense CTR: How High is Too High?

I have a number of websites with a CTR in the 10-20% range. All my traffic is genuine (organic, or through reputable referring sites like EZA). All the sites have at least 10+ pages of content. My ads are placed in such a way that I get such a high CTR.

Is this CTR too high? Am I likely to get banned by Google because of this?

If your traffic is geniune as you say, there's no reason why you would get banned from Google.
It is a really high CTR, but if you're dong things right, you will not have any problems.

    hey,
wow that is a pretty good clickthrough rate. That being said though, i wouldn't worry about getting banned from google unless your getting your traffic and clicks through some blackhat tricks or another form of illegal traffic. Google is pretty intelligent and can tell if your getting real clicks so no matter what your CTR is you should be fine. That is a pretty impressive one though and it is nice to hear of other people who are achieving those kind of results as well. Your on the right track
    Cheers

Let's say 30% is perfectly fine, this means the site is well optimized for the (quality) traffic it gets.
50% and more would be suspicious.

      Hi sashas,

Having a high CTR is good, the higher the better. You will never be banned for having a high CTR. Having said that, a high CTR could be an indication of a problem, but not necessarily.

If your CTR is high because your layout tricks people into clicking ads because they appear as navigation links, that could be bad. If people are clicking your ads because they are truly interested in buying what your advertisers are selling then that is good.

What is good for advertisers is good for you and AdSense, what is bad for advertisers is bad for AdSense and bad for you.

        What dburk said

That is a very solid CTR rate, but not suspicious in the least. To me, a CTR could never be too high to be suspicious on its own. It is when its tied to a massive increase in traffic that I think I would be more concerned.

If you are getting 20 visitors a day with a 15% CTR, and then for 5 days out of the blue you get 1000 visitors a day witha 50% CTR, I think I would be more worried

I don't see what you have to worry about, if your traffic is as you say it is. Your CTR is not particularly that high to cause any suspicion. I have seen CTRs in the 33% range so if I was you, I would just concentrate on increasing your traffic, and see if there is any way to improve your earnings.

    thanks guys.

My layout involves just two ad units - one large rectangle below the heading, and a link unit in the navigation section. Its not deceptive by any standards (the ad links are of a visibly different color). I was told that a high CTR can get you banned for no reason at all, but I guess those were the people who were doing some shady things...I guess I am fine for now..

John aka XFactor says he gets as high as 90% CTR at times, and even a few times at 100%. I myself have experienced this, but it isn't the norm. On average it will be around 20%-40%.

  • As long as you are not violating TOS there is no problem with high clickthroughs. I have a niche site that pulls 28%. Obviously I don't give them affiliate options on that page. They either click the ads or leave. But nothing on the site is against TOS. Google wants to make money just like you. It's all about targeting. People come to your site.... then they either do something or they leave. So why not put something in front of their face for them to do?

I also have sites that pulls below 5% because they are not nearly as targeted or I do not focus on Adsense on them.

I had a new site a couple of days ago that had one impression with three clicks for a 300% CTR! I have no idea how that happened. Could it be some glitch at Google or someone using the back button to go back and click again? ?

Anyway, it made me nervous but I have not heard anything from Google about it.
