How long will it take for me to break into the No. 3 rank in Google? (facts inside)

It all comes down to the competition for that key phrase.

What is the number for broad and phrase match?

Where are you in the rankings now?

What about the other competitors e.g. positions 1-3 ?

How old is your domain?

* Alexa rank in the 120,000s
* Compete.com rank in the 330,000s
* Not listed in Dmoz
* No Bloglines entries
* Nothing from Wikipedia
* Nothing from Yahoo Directory

It basically is a static, stupid looking page that doesn't offer much for that key-phrase I'm targeting. And the key-phrase is not in the title or any where on the page.

This page is ranked 4 in Google results page for that key-phrase.

My question is. If I do the above, how long should it take me before I beat this page?

Broad matches 354,000

I'm not indexed, yet. GoDaddy had blocked GoogleBot via a hidden, automatically inserted robots.txt. I discovered it two days ago and uploaded an empty replacement, but the freaking GoogleBot hasn't checked the new robots.txt since then. I'm frantically refreshing Google Webmaster page to see when their bot will graciously take another look at my robots.txt!!

I just registered the domain like 4 days ago or something...

The 1-3 competitors are pretty established, but once I get to spot 4, who knows, I maybe able to out-rank them...One thing is for sure, their websites are not as interactive and specialized as I hope my website would be once it's done.

I suggest you do a bit of web 2.0 promotion.

That will quickly get you indexed probably in a day.

Try a squidoo.com lens, put some good content up there, and link to your page.

Then do a digg.com post (to the squidoo.com site), and also a propeller.com post (also pointing to squidoo).

do a wordpress.com post pointing to the squidoo.com lense and your money page.

Follow that up with a weebly.com post (but link to the squidoo lens this time), and (say) a wikidot.com post also to squidoo.com. Also link to wordpress.com for both (make sure you have at least 600-700 words if doing more than one link).

Do a bit of social bookmarking to the weebly.com and wikidot.com posts.

Try and use the keyword phrase in both the usernames and url's

e.g if you keyword phrase is seagate disk, then try and get a url like
squidoo.com/seagate-disk or squidoo.com/seagate-disk or even squidoo.com/seagate-disk-1, etc.

Do for all accounts.

If you have time do a post to scribd (create a pdf with some text, and a link to your domain). scribd ranks extremely well, very quick.

Also put the keyword in the title, and in the description (for propellor, digg) and obviously in your articles.

Don't be surprised if you find some of the above pages ranking very quickly above your website, but then your website should start ranking quickly.

Let us know how you get on. As I say I would expect once you have done this that you would be indexed in 24 hours at most, and probably a lot quicker.

I'll definitely do a squidoo lens once the GoogleBot is successfully unblocked. I'm not worried about being indexed as much as I'm worried about the time that it will take me to rise through the ranks.

I would like to know how long it takes from the time you're indexed to the time your on the first page of the results, based on the efforts and information that I provided in the original post and in the post answering your question...

Your missing the point.

Doing at least a squidoo lens will almost ensure a quick visit by GoogleBot to your website within 24 hours. The GoogleBot could be days or weeks coming back to your website, especially if it was blocked in the past.

You can shortcut that process by a mini web 2.0 campaign like I outlined.

If you spend a few hours doing the above, you'll put yourself in a great position.

I've made it to page one in roughly similar competition just doing what I outlined to you.

Whether you will get there or not or rather how long it will take is another question. Depends on a number of factors, including just how entrenched the other players are.

There is no simple answer to this, but one thing is for sure, it's not going to happen while your reading instead of taking action.

So what are you waiting for, get to work

I'm not recommending that you link from your site to any of the web 2.0 sites.

It's the other way around.

If you wondering why I'm saying to link to another web 2.0 site to squidoo which in turns links to your site, then good question!

squidoo.com now that is has removed the nofollow tag in it's links has a very powerful presence in search engine results with google.

What you are doing is taking advantage of that, but then increasing that link power even further by have a network of links link to squidoo.com to build that link up.

Building multiple networks of links is a great way to bring dramatic link power. and what's at the end of all that? Your website!

Trust me, you will likely get indexed (unless there are other issues with your website) quickly and probably rank well too.

Once you have done it, get back and let us know how you got on.

I've applied a much more advanced version of this to hundreds of sites over the past year or so with often amazing results.

I'm not doubting your expertise, Tim, but it really doesn't make sense to me to work on building links to my Squidoo lens rather than my original website. I feel that the articles and Web 2.0 submissions that I make should link to my original website rather than the Squidoo lens...

I will still make a Squidoo lens, but I won't be linking to it as much as I'm linking to my main website...

I like the idea of doing a press release to generate traffic. I'm afraid I don't know how to use a press release to research and evaluate keywords.

I'm asking this question because I'm a total newbie with ZERO experience. I just want to align my expectations with reality.

By the way, the GoogleBot has finally checked my robots.txt. Now I'm able to submit a sitemap and hopefully will be indexed soon!

Hi msafi,

Nobody can answer your question with any certainty. There are simply too many variables. How can anyone know the level of quality of your work? Even if we know the quantity of work you are doing we can't presume to judge the quality of your work.

If you do an amazing job of creating mind blowing content you could, with a little luck, capture the attention of a few authority sites that link to you and shoot you to the top in a matter of days. Or, you could plod along for years and never quite get there.

You are shooting at a moving target and there is nothing stopping your competitors from doing a better job than you. You could think of it as a foot race. Your competitors may be pacing themselves and looking over their shoulders. When they see you approaching they could then pour it on, leaving you in the dust.

I'm not trying to discourage you, I just want to align your expectations with reality.

Fair enough, your decision obviously.

This was a short term strategy to help boost your rankings, and importantly to get you virtually immediately indexed.

I've done this a heap of times to propel myself onto page 1, literally in days.

This doesn't replace your traditional linking strategy to your website by the way. This is in addition to that.

One of the really cool things about this strategy is that most people don't do it
