What's your experience with promoting web hosting through ppc besides the fact that keyword bidding is very expensive? Tips and pointers?

      I tried promoting hosting (CJ) and this is what I experienced.

      The hosting companies shave like crazy. Think about it for a second. How can they pay $100 commission on every $120 sale and stay in business? The business model just does not add up to me with out there being significant shaving. In Mar of this year I sold 10 hosting plans that I know of, but I only got paid for 6 of them. I know the sales were made, because the orders were made by friends/family and I have the receipts of the sales.

      Another problem is that most hosting companies will not release payments for 2-3 months. For example, a friend of mine bought 2 year prepaid hosting account with HostGator through my aff link in Jan of 09 and instead of locking the payment on the 10th of Feb, they extended the payment 2x. So instead of getting the commission in Feb like I should have, I did not get paid until April.

      There is money to be made, but I find it to much of a hassle to fight for the sales I earned.

    I think it all depends on your level of promotion. If you are doing organic traffic, works fine. But, it will require a lot of links to be competitive. And, frankly, there are some aged sites out there that have been in this game for a while. So, I wouldn't recommend it.

    I wouldn't recommend paid traffic either. The margins are not there and it is very competitive. I think there are better niches.

    be patient. you have to work steadily.
