Linking Strategy : Should I Target Long Tail Keywords instead of the Main Keyword?

Guys,

I have seen people achieving high rankings in Google for their main keyword by targetting long tail keywords and they don't even bother to link to their sites using the main KW at all.

This is my personal experience .

I targetted terms "free credit report online" "free online credit report" "free credit report agencies" for my index page. I didn't bother to target "free credit report" at all knowing that it is a super competitve phrase, but guess what, I was on page 3 for "free credit report"!

This make me think that it may be a good idea not to target the main keyword at all , instead target the long tail keywords containing the main keyword.

Comments and suggestions please

Thx

  • Well it does make sense doing that, it still contains the main keyword. I'd still do what you're doing, and add along the main keyword term but from what it sounds like you're doing pretty well =P

I say keep promoting those long-tails. Test it out some more, and see how far you get. I think it's really interesting.

  • I like to gets lots of targeted traffic through long-tail keywords that are "off the beaten" path of my competition. This brings consistent results over the long haul. Plus gradually your theme becomes more obvious to the big G and you start ranking better for more broad terms as well.
  • The more specific the search term, the more targeted the traffic is the "usual" win of targeting the longer phrases.
