Site Conversion: HTML to Wordpress

Hello,

I have many html sites that are old sites with great rankings. But they are bloated with pages that have accumulated over the years.

I have been working on an ecommerce solution and shopping cart system for wordpress and am now at the point where that is ready and I want to start to convert these old html sites to wordpress.

The thing that worries me is that I am going to be condensing the site with the conversion which will bring down the page numbers and content.

The other thing is that all the site page names will change. Do I need to go through all of the pages and do a 301 redirect?

Any input on this would be appreciated.

Whenever I do site conversions, here are the steps I take to ensure rankings aren't impacted:

    1. Get a list of your indexed pages (use "site:yourdomain.com" in google)
    2. Ensure your new pages have the same content and title tags
    3. If you're removing pages, do a 301 redirect for those old pages to your home page (or similar interior page)
    4. If you're changing extensions for .htm/.html to any other format in WordPress, make sure you do 301 redirects for those as well.

Here's a site that offers a course on HTML to WP conversions...I have no affiliation, nor have I used it, but it might be worth investigating:

Agreed, all you really need to do is check out Google or use site explorer on Yahoo and do the 301 redirect.
