    Hi James,

I didn't know you could "feel" the little green line.

Real page rank is updated constantly. What you see on the toolbar is simply a snapshot in time of where the PageRank was at some point in the recent past. It is not indicative of your pages traffic or ranking on SERPs, therefore it has little meaning in SEO.

Unfortunately, it really is only important to people who are buying and selling the little green line. It is a gimmick that captures the fascination of thousands of people and con artist use it as a method to get people to part with their money based on the length of the little green line.

Trust me when I tell you that SEO professionals ignore it (except when they sense that their client has the little green line fever ).

      Finally some sanity about PR..

Yet still, no matter how many times you tell people or clients this, it seems to never quite get through the hype they've had drilled in their heads.

Have to agree with that, I never pay much attention to pagerank.

I did notice a domain I bought brand new 22 days ago has PR4's on most pages which is nice, but in line with my expectations.

Yes the little green line (or in my case the text, as I like numbers) is way overrated, but a bit of fun as well.

        Cheers

My homepage stayed the same but I added one new PR 7 internal, quite a few PR 6 pages. I was also happy to see individual forum and post urls getting pagerank again.

Yes it does, but PR1 is the lowest score on the scale, where 10 is the highest.

Google's recent PR update resulted in the home page of my site, SEOAly, jumping from no toolbar PR (not PR0, but no PR registering in the toolbar) to a toolbar value of PR3. A pleasant surprise to find on a Monday morning.

I haven't noticed a change in mine but even if it went or goes down I don't really care too much. I have sites with higher rankings with minimal work than sites that are older and higher PR. I've never noticed it really make a difference but maybe there is something to it.

On one of my sites, I went up a PR (from 2- to 3) - it happened after I submitted the site to the Yahoo Directory - not sure if this was the reason.

Yeah, the green bar is overrated. As was mentioned at the top of this thread, PR is updated (likely) daily, it's just that Google only updates the "toolbar PR" for us once every few months - it's their way of keeping us from being able to more easily test ways to influence (ok, MANIPULATE! lol) PR.

Now one thing of interest is that although there have been some PR shifts (for the worse - ie, PR4 to PR3), traffic doesn't seem to have been affected. I mean if PR is so important, then losing PR would mean losing rankings, and losing traffic.

So although toolbar PR drops have been noticed, most are still pulling in consistent traffic (over 3-4 month periods - going back of course, to account for the delay in when Google updates the toolbar PR), which would lead us to believe that perhaps PR isn't so important anymore, after all.

The average PageRank of every site on the web must drop over time or the expanding number of links on the web (new pages being created every single second every single day) would cause everyone to eventually reach PR10. In other words, as the web grows, the link popularity needed to reach each "PR level" on the toolbar increases.

So a drop in PR doesn't necessarily mean *any* change except a larger field of competition.

this was an unexpected PR update. It didn't make much difference for me. Just one of my sites went from PR3 to PR4.

It's interesting that so many people still care about that green little bar In the end it doesn't really matter at all as Google doesn't really rank sites using the green bar. You can verify this easily by searching for any word - most times you will see sites with a lower PR ranking higher than sites with a higher PR.
