How reliable do you think the Google adwords tool on exact/phrase match?

  • Not that reliable, but it's okay for what I do... I prefer other tools, but this one is so simple that it kind of makes up for it. Their exact match is more accurate, and their search-based tool is even more accurate and can target countries for their search volume.

  • Use it as a guide. Some results will be pretty spot on whilst others won't. What you need to remember that if a site shows 1,000 exact match it doesn't mean that if you were no.1 for that phrase you'd get 1,000 click throughs. You would get a percentage fo that traffic. Then you have to factor in how relevant your title and description is. You also have to think about how many of those searches are other webmasters / IM's checking their rankings... analyzing the competition etc.

Don't take the figures as 'gospel' and you'll be ok.

    • Guide is definitely the way to take it, good point!

  • Google do not show accurate numbers for searches. on a regular basis, I've found that keywords the show up in a client's log files frequently enough to be included in google's keyword suggestion tool, don't ever make it in. The tool tells me no one searches for the phrase, yet we see hundreds of visitors per day for the phrase.
  • I forgot to mention above that you can sometimes get a better idea on search volumes by running an Adwords campaign over a few days. Providing you are within the first page PPC listings you can gauge search figures by analysing the impressions.
  • It may not be the best but for sure will be of good help for you :-)
  • I think it's not very reliable, but despite this it's a great free tool
