Why are so many people on Page 1 of Google still not making money or getting traffic?

Just a question. Lately, all of the threads I have been finding have said something like, "I am on page 1 on Google, but I don't have any traffic" or "I am on Number 1 on Google for my keywords but am getting very little traffic."

I can't tell you how many times I have come across one of these two statements, so I am wondering does it even matter if you get on page 1 since it seems like a lot of folks are saying it is doing little to boost their traffic or the revenue. Some people even say that a keyword gets on 4K plus searches a month, but they still aren't seeing any thing. Is this the norm? Any different perspectives?

  • Hi Dlewis78,

There are a couple things going on that cause most of those posts. The first is confusion about Google's personalized search feature. Google keeps track of which sites you visit and returns those higher in SERP for each web browser that you might be using. So while you may see you website listed on the first page, the rest of the world does not.

The other common issue is related to improper keyword research and optimization. If you target a keyword that is relevant, but has very few monthly searches, it doesn't help that much to be listed #1 for a search phrase that almost never gets searched.

Of course there are other possible issues like using the Keyword tools improperly or interpreting the data incorrectly which leads to selecting the wrong keywords.

It's not uncommon for folks that are just learning the ropes to make those kinds of mistakes and that's why this forum is a good place to find out what went wrong.
  • I think the keyword you choose's too short, not much visitor use it. My Blog have the position 2 in VN by keyword "Billboard 200". But not much people type that keyword, they usually use some thing different like "Download album ... on Billboard 200", "Billboard 200 Chart This Week"...
I think you should change your keyword longer.
  • First - you need a somewhat popular niche in which ppl travel
Second - you need great content/products

    • Getting to page 1 is a tough gig but the point is that when people look at your listing the description has to force them to click your link.

Seriously do some research on your title and description tags.
These 2 are your salesmen on the search engines.

  • Lots of people (especially newbies like me) make the mistake of picking keywords that may get them ranked #1, but there's absolutely no traffic for that term. That's where Google Keyword Tools or products like Market Samurai or Micro Niche Finder come into play. These tools help you find keyword phrases that bring enough daily traffic, yet have fairly low competition.
  • 1. They mess up the search volume potential.
    2. Their keywords are wrong so their traffic is less targeted.
    3. Their landing pages are crap.
    4. What they are selling is crap.
