We are going to have a competition to see who is the NUMBER 1 speed Google optimiser.

The aim is to see who can get the highest ranking on Google for a pre-determined set of keywords within a 4 day period.

The rules are that you cannot use spamming and any paid services, only free methods that anyone else can use. You also can not use your own sites or sites you control.

The winner of the competition will get to make their own WSO detailing the methods they used to win and to sell it to all the other participants for $5. After this they can sell to all other members for any amount they wish.

The methods WILL be verified by experts before the WSO is sold, so any cheating will be pointless.

I will also personally paypal the winner $100 from my own pocket.

I am thinking we limit this to 100 members only to allow me to set a launch date.

Anyone who wants to join drop me a PM AND let us know on this thread and you will be put on the list.

Oh also drop me any ideas of some keyphrases that we can use. Please make them quite competitive, but NOT hyper-competitive.

Anyone who wants to give any ideas of other things that you think should be included in the rules please write it on this thread.

So lets see who is the BEST. PM and post on this thread!!!

Good Luck all!!

SEO competitions frequently run using non-sensical character strings. Eg you could all compete for dlghasf aslfghasl asfglhsgl which of course won't have any search results until people create them so everyone starts from the same point.

    Hi Andy,

I think it would be better and more challenging to try to rank for something that is competitive but not tooooo competitive as it will show the really ranking skills of the winner.

Great to see you guys on board. Oh and if anyone wants it may be an idea to rate the thread to highlight it so we can get more competitors quickly.

    Hi Glenn,

What else do you think should be included?

I just want to help everyone to learn the best way to "honestly" rank highest and fastest. And in doing this the one with the best method can make some money for their time and also gain the kudos and reputation as the number 1 speed ranker.

It serves as being a bit of fun, educational and profitable

    What do you think?

Well, I was just wondering if you are going to pick a site or make one and everyone try to get the best rankings for that site.
Or, everyone build their own site (has to be proof of newly started) or blog, web 2.0, etc. site and just rank for your keywords.
The no sites you control or own kinda threw me a little.

So, what about the rules? KW competition? (I think less than 10,000 quoted results in Google should be the limit, 'cause anything more than this would be a bit difficult for us newbies)

Hi Glenn. Basically I want it to be something that anyone can do from scratch (after reading the WSO) without having any prior experience or having to spend money. We can either make it the highest ranked page (which contains your warrior username in the text somewhere, or we can make it a specific domain. What do you suggest?

Dexthor I agree it should be for a term that is not soooo competitive, but not too easy either as the whole point is to see who has the best method so we can all learn at the end and if it is too easy then we wont really learn anything new and also a lot of luck may be involved.

I do want newbies to enter, but realistically they should enter more for a bit of fun, but also so they can buy the winning WSO at the end for the discounted price of $5. Bare in mind that this WSO will contain VERY powerful ranking strategies so will be worth A LOT more!

Anyone who knows enough to win can do this now, without entering a contest, and sell it to whoever they want at the price they choose, lol.

And so can the losers, so I'm not really sure what the winner is getting here. The right to sell a WSO? They already have that right. $100? Not really worth it to anyone who knows what they're doing.

Strange but true huh? And the next problem is that any decent term won't be getting ranked worth butkis in 4 days. If the winner is 'the highest ranking page' for that term...ie; page4,5,6.. yada yada... also won't teach peeps much as rankings that deep might as well be on page 100....

Also, we have to consider 'query deserves freshness' in that new pages can rank initially and then drop off over time. This also brings another problem, query space type. Some terms (query spaces) have different ranking rules based on the data freshness factors. Some will rank new documents over old... This means what U think U are learning may be entirely useless in other niches.

It's a contest not an experiment... the data sets and suppositions aren't in place to be able to get meaningful data.... so don't read too much into the results my friends...

We're currently doing research into SERP Flux relating to personalized search, behavioral and geographic signals. Early data shows there are no two SERPs the same and this means judging the contest can be suspect as SERP flux from on DC to another and one computer to another will vary. How can one judge and SEO contest is there are no identical sets of ranking data out there?

Hell, a 4 day contest belies the realities of SEO and is more about search engine spamming than anything else. So part of the 'powerful marketing' tool set is fast churn and burn SEO? Not really a viable concept.

I am all for contests... nothing wrong with that and I hope ya'll have fun... just be careful of what you are taking away from the data

      I'll give it a shot.

I think it needs to be a phrase OVER 50,000 when in quotes or it will be too easy/cut-throat between the contestants.

Actually, I think over 75,000 when in quotes will "separate the men from the boys"

Most people would be looking to break into niche phrases that are semi-competitive, so if you went with a low competitive phrase I don't think it would be so beneficial per se.

Many wsos lately on how to get to Google's first page. But when you check out the phrase they used, it is usually way under 10,000 in quotes.

If you go with something hard, it will show what kind of methods actually work best in the real world today.

Maybe the winner would only be on page two after four days, but over time with the same methods would probably break into page one. That is the thing we are all after.

I never tried this in four days, not much time, but should be interesting...

I agree with you Dan, I think it should be difficult as that way even the really good SEOers will learn something new.

Blackhatcat and Samjohn I think you are both missing the point here, there are MANY people writing WSOs and books (Clickbank et al) about ranking fast, but there is one problem that most people would have when trying to sell such a book and that is reputation and believability.

Quite frankly I would be 100 times more inclined to buy an ebook or WSO from someone who has come on here and had the cojones to PROVE their method works the best, rather than post some "screenshots" (yes, in inverted commas!). I think the winner of this competition could potentially have a best seller on his hands!! I for one would buy that ebook at a high retail price (let alone at $5 for participants).

I have absolutely nothing to gain from staging this competition except for the knowledge I can get from it. In fact I am willing to pay $100 for it from the outset. I am confident it will benefit all that participate, both winner and newbie alike.

Bare in mind that we are not testing the be all and end all of SEO (we might some other time.), that would mean that not only would you have to rank, but STAY high on the SERPs. But what we are testing is a method that most, if not all Warriors would definitely love to know to add to their arsenal of powerful sales tools.

Im definately interested, count me in.
The rules need to get sorted. Seems like theres lots of grey areas. Surely whoever has the most friends with well established websites wins.
Can you ask for favours off friends? Does that include outsourcing things to friends?
I presume we can use free tools but not paid tools
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[143015].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author Nixter
Hi Tom, yes I agree we need to make sure the rules are fair to all. But unless anyone can follow your method (which will be published at the end) for free and not using any established domains and domains where you would either have to know someone or have to pay for. It should be using methods that anyone can use for free.

I am thinking we do allow the use of any tools, but if they are submission tools then they can only submit to free sites. What do you think?
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[143253].message }}
    • Profile picture of the author Dan Ellenwood
I would think it would be more "fun" to not allow any tool use unless anyone in the world can download it free somewhere. No money can be spent whatsoever to pay for link submission, etc. All sites used have to be free so anyone in the world can use them with no money.

In other words, the winner can hand off his plan to someone with no money, only an internet connection, and they can duplicate it.

Otherwise, the one with the best tools and most connections wins.

If everyone would rather go in the tool and connections route that is fine, but many rules would have to be put in place first I'd think. I'm part of some membership sites and I'm sure I could get people to help me in some ways (connections) that would give me an unfair advantage over many other people. Others would probably have a big advantage over me in other ways.

The playing field needs to be as level as possible.

Nixter, why don't you make up the rules and then put it up for everyone's input and then eventually a good method of the best way to do this will become apparent.

And when is the scheduled date(s) for this?

    Hi Nixter,

    Great idea!

Originally Posted by Nixter View Post

I have a few questions regarding the rules.:

Can you define "spamming" because I'm sure some folks will want to push the limits of what they can do. You may have a lot of upset people if they are doing something they think is OK but you might classify as spamming.

Regarding "paid services", can we have an employee do all the work and if not how will this be monitored?

Regarding "can not use your own sites or sites you control", does this mean that the pages that we are promoting are not on a domain that we own or control? How would that work, exactly? Would we be able to create the content?

If someone has an account at an article directory, as an "Expert Author" with a large following, will they be able to use that same account? If someone is the member of a large group of friends on a social network, will they be able to use that network?

How about forum signatures? If some has built up thousands of posts at hundreds of forums over a number of years, can these preexisting accounts be used?

In other words, if someone has built up large followings over a number of years, will they be able to use those years of work to help their rankings? If so, why wouldn't websites you control or own be essentially the same thing?

If you use Squidoo lens or hub pages are these considered sites you control? How would they be different from say articles submitted to article directories?

It seems to me that speed SEO is best accomplished by leveraging preparation and work done over many years. Is this a contest to see who has already built the strongest networks? If so, why would you exclude "your own sites or sites you control"?

If this is a contest to see who can do it the fastest starting from scratch, does this mean any accounts and networks you use, have to created from scratch?

These are just a few questions that come to mind. I'm sure there will be many more.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[143411].message }}

Hi Don and Dan, great questions and points. What I want to do is get as many people to sign up first and then I will open up the rules to discussion. I agree with you Dan about paid software as it gives an unfair advantage to those who can't afford it.

What I am thinking is that everything should be from scratch and free so that the ebook at the end has a huge value to newbies and can sell like hotcakes on the open market after the contest.

I would like to get the contest to 100 participants and am currently at 20 after 3 days. Unfortunately we have been moved from the main forum so it may be harder to reach 100, but with all your help letting others know I think we can do it within a week or two.
