I have a .info site that I put up 2 - 3 years ago, before I even understood what a TLD was!

It's a very simple 5 page HTML site, and Google has me in position #1 for a handful of keyword phrases. I was just learning SEO at the time, and the site was more of an experiment than anything.

a TLD is a top level domain. www . sony . com is a TLD, where www . sony . com / directory is no longer a TLD.

let's put it this way, you can purchase a .com, .net, .tv, .info... it's all your choice. you can't buy a .gov.

therefore, why would a search engine add more weight to a TLD that's .info over .com if we can purchase either one?

Google does not put more weight to public TLD. It does put a lot more weight to .edu, .gov and .mil TLDs.

Many of my sites are .info domains, and several of them rank well (Google page 1, above the 5th spot) for some very competitive keywords. IMHO, It's more about the content, SEO, and backlinking than the TLD.

I've seen plenty of competitive keyphrases that have .info's in the top rankings. I think they just get a bad name because spammers use them since they are so cheap. But really, if you go white hat with your link building you should be fine.

I just bought some at 1+1 for .99. Be warned though. They were very slow to update my nameservers. I'm used to that happening right away, and they took a few hours.
