SEO Question, From HTML to Wordpress

I am hoping that maybe some of ya'll can help me with this potential SEO problem I may have.

A current local client is wanting to switch to wordpress so he can make updates to the site and also add a better photo gallery than he currently has. My problem comes in that his site is ranked #1 for his current keyword phrases in Google. He is worried (I am too) that switching over to wordpress may jeopardize his position in Google.

Current site is all html pages. Is there a way to avoid any changes in position or will the switch to wordpress not hurt him?

I would appreciate any input.

Thank you
Dany

You will be able to keep URLs the same
You can create permalinks to have a .html extension

I've done this many times and if you keep URLs the same, there's no need for redirects. Also pay attention to keeping page titles and descriptions the same as well.

Thank you both for taking the time to answer my post.

Looks like I have found a plugin that will rename the pages to a .html Actually the pages are .htm
So I will look further into that.

What I am going to try to do is leave all the .html pages up until I get everything finished in Wordpress. I'll just delete the index.php so Google (I hope) won't pick up wordpress change over yet.

Took awhile to get him to the top of Google. We had to really tweak the content and that pushed him up to the top. He also has a few backlinks.

So I'll make sure that the structure is not changed and hope for the best.

      Thank you again
      Dany

  • It might. Any change could trip the filters... so you'll need to be very careful in your planning of the move.

But if the old format has worn out it might need to be changed at some point.

I moved a site from html, to joomla to wordpress and never took it down for more than 3 hours during the actual move and never dropped off the first page of Google.

I didn't check the impact on other search engines.

But if you content and link structure in the content, along with incoming links and your Meta Tags remain the same you stand a good chance of keeping near the top.
