I have a site self hosted with wordpress which appears in google as http://sitename.com. Would it matter if i build backlinks and put http://www.sitename.com. Your help would be much appreciated.

Makes no difference. I assume you are not using either approach for the anchor text, but just of the actual link.

Actually if google has it listed as : domain.com why would you send traffic to .wwwdomain.com? I would build backlinks directly to the domain.com
because the other way you would be forcing the Goog to do -301 re-directs and that is not a big penalty but does some damage.

    Cheers

ok thanks for the help. Im just used to working with static sites and since wordpress set it as sitename.com and missing the www of the start i was a bit confused. I know i could add the www. but i think its not worth messing with rankings.

Well, you need to mention it through webmaster toolas at which one you prefer and then you must use that one only in your promotions or building links.

Actually Webmaster Tools has nothing to do with your ranking on the internet anyway. You don't have to set a preferred domain in Webmaster Tools either. The preferred domain is just the version that you want used for your site in the search results, the one that's indexed. So other than submitting your site map to Webmaster Tools it does not dictact how well you rank in the search engines for whatever keyword phrase you are going for. It's all down to backlinks. You only really need to use a server-side 301 redirect if you've moved your site to a new domain or if people visit your site through a variation of ways. In your case, with or without the www But it doesn't matter if you create backlinks with or without the www Google will still attribute your link and apply any PR from that site/page to yours. Plus I think all wordpress domains revert back to the naked domain anyway.

I usually spend some time on that; which is proven to be beneficial in long term. If there are separate inbound links to ww.yoursite.com and yoursite.com, Google sees these as separate web sites; unless you do a 301 redirect. So I would suggest you stick to one and have a .htaccess 301 redirect from one to another.

You can, but before you do, non www version must be redirected to www version to avoid canonical issue.

Ideally you need a redirect from www to non www (or the other way), so that you do not lose juice.

ok so just to clarify for future use if the sites indexed as sitename.com without www then only build backlinks without the www if you do make the mistake like may do a 301 redirect.

I would recommend to build all of your backlinks the same as far as no www or with www, unless you use google webmaster tools to set up a favorite option. Then it wouldn't matter.
