Google’s Matt Cutts hinted that site speed is important to Google, and it may be considered a factor when ranking websites in 2010.

Here is an excerpt from the interview: "Historically, we haven't had to use it(site load speed) in our search rankings, but a lot of people within Google think that the web should be fast. It should be a good experience, and so it's sort of fair to say that if you're a fast site, maybe you should get a little bit of a bonus. If you really have an awfully slow site, then maybe users don't want that as much".

Lat year Google had already introduced Page Load Time as a ranking element in Google Adwords ads.

How to optimize site for better loading and performance :

http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ has added a new section in the “Labs” menu titled “Site Performance”. This new feature provides statistics about how fast your web pages load, how that speed compares to other websites, and tips and suggestions for speeding up your page loads.

Official Google Blog: Introducing Google Public DNS is yet another tool Google has released for webmasters to increase their site performance.

Google recently released Page Speed Home, an add-on for Firefox browsers which can diagnose a number of elements which impact page load times (such as Javascript and CSS files, image file sizes, etc).

Additionally Google has released Google Analytics Blog: Google Analytics launches asynchronous tracking that allows the GA tracking code to be loaded asynchronously, which also helps reduce the load time of your webpages.

Google Code Blog: Introducing Closure Tools is yet another tool launched by Google to optimize scripts and remove un-necessary whitespaces thereby helping the site to load faster.

All this is in addition to Let's make the web faster - Google Code where you can find many more tips & tricks to make sure your site loads as fast as possible. This isn't just important to protect your search engine rankings, it's also a vital part of conversion rate optimisation - users don't like to wait, and a slow site will lose customers.

Hope this helps..

Additionally if you use wordpress, the following plugins can increase performance and loading speed:

    1. Autoptimize - This plug-in does a lot to make your blog as lightweight as possible.

    2. WP Super Cache - this plug-in will serve static HTML file for your visitors. Wordpress blogs usualy use heavier PHP scripts. Cached HTML files will be served very quickly.

    3. cSprites - Speed up page load time with dynamic image Srites - this tool uses CSS tricks to combine images into a lager one. It will compress your images in your content in one big image. This way your pages will load much faster.

    4. Web Optimizer - the aim of this plug-in is to do everything to load your blog as fast as possible. This will increase page's load speed.

    5. 1-Blog Cacher - server load is also important and this tool will minimize server load and increase the response speed. Great plug-in for slower servers.

    6. Hyper Cache - If you have no money to pay for fast hosting provider and want to increase speed of your blog this plug-in is what you need.

    7. CSS Cache Buster - to have a very latest version of CSS use this plug-in. Using Caching system this will speed things up.

    Hope this helps..

Use the speed tool in Google's webmaster tools.

If this does pan out to become a major factor I'm
going to buy a UK web hosting account and forward
all UK traffic automatically by IP address to it. Just
    for starters anyway

@ Intrepreneur : Use this link to test the loading speed. http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/

You will need to login with your Google account. In the 'Labs' menu there is a section 'Site Performance'. It contains all the tools you need to test the speed.

  • And that's why you don't buy crappy shared hosting. A plug in is not going to compensate for a poor host. Google likes to talk about a lot of things... but only they know if it's for real or not.

@ Daniel McGonagle : Use the WP Super Cache. It is supposed to decrease your load time considerably.

Alternatively, the next best thing you could do is enable gzip compression on your server. It can save upto 90% of your load time.

Just contact your webhost and they might do it themselves for you!!

To add to the discussion, images are the biggest culprits when it comes to slow loading speed.

So, always use the “Save for the web” feature included on image editing software. Images represent the heavier load on virtually any website so make sure you are optimizing them. Alternatively you can also turn to an Online Image Optimizer : http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/imageoptimizer/.

A simple height and width attribute to your <img> tag can significantly improve the image rendering time as the browser gets an hint about the image size even before downloading it locally.

This is a definite must! I know with photoshop, it will show you an estimated load speed in the lower left hand corner. (if saving for web devices) Some images that have less detail and fewer variations (such as bg image or border) can be saved as a .gif and take less time to load. Where a more detailed image will load faster and look better as jpg or png.

I usually play around with this to find the best acceptable level of quality at the fastest speed.

If I had to use only one wordpress plugin, it would definitely be WP Super Cache. It really decreases the load time considerably.
