My Experiences on Backlinking

I've been testing different backlinking techniques over the past year. Here's what I've concluded:

Sig links - can work, but these aren't good for the long term. You miss a couple days of backlinking w/ sig links, and your site(s) will drop in the SERPs.

Directories - Forget them...need I say more

Article Submission - You can get referral traffic from these sites like EZA or GoArticles - and yeah - sure, they will appear in your backlink list - however, I don't think they can move you up a lot from what I've seen. but there were times when I would have an article from GoArticles and EZA along with my site on the first page...totally dominating my niche. The CTR from with these articles and from what I've experienced is pretty low - and I've had some very well written articles.
However, I think if you get enough articles that are unique and well written, this might be the best approach???

Social BookMarking Sites - A few sites like Digg and Reditt can bring you referal traffic. I've noticed that Digg can get indexed in less than 24 hours but then will drop in the SERPs over time. Overall, I didn't see Social BM sites help my sites in the SERPs. And G has to know about them and dismisses them as spam since a lot of ppl do bookmarking in order to gain one way links. I think G is much smarter than that and knows that a lot of these links in these type of sites are not natural.

Press Release Sites - I'll be tring this next week - so I guess I'll see for myself.

Profile linkes (or as some ppl would like to refer them as "Angela's Links" ) - I don't bother with them...

Web 2.0 properties such as Squidoo and Hubpages - I really don't think they can push your site up that much but again, will get some referral traffic.

As far as online opimization - for my own personal sites (and not really my clients), I focus on material that I have a passion for. I write lots of pages and make sure they are well optimized (sometimes usually for long tailed KWs) and have been seeing results from that. If you were to pick one or the other, I would think that online is really more important than offline/backlinking. Seems that G rewards you if you have a lot of material that is unique.

Conclusion - Spend more time optimizing your site than backlinking. For me, I think I have gotten further with writing more interesting pages than try to backlink the heck out of my site(s). This is my own opinion - what have been your experiences?

  • You are basically saying there is almost no way to build back links.

I have seen results from just about all these methods.

    • What about blogs? I've gotten indexed and ranked on page 1 for a few good blog posts with backlinks.

I've also found profile links will help push me slowly up in the serps. They do work, but shouldn't be your only backlinking effort. Also, articles will help a little, but I think they used to do a lot more. As you said, Google isn't exactly stupid, they know people are buying articles, spinning them, etc, etc, just to get lots of backlinks. They work just about as well as a high PR blog post, or profile link that isn't spammed out. I think the playing field is being leveled out by G, and everything is being devalued.
  • Hi,

Quick quetion, in your experiment, where you folllwing some sort of structure or just submitting willy nilly becuase I find some of what you written about Article Submission and profile backlinks contrary to my results.

    Happy New YEar

  • While it's true that you should spend time optimizing your site, all of the backlinking methods that you mention do work.

In addition to it raising your site in the serps it also brings additional visitors to your site when they see your links either through a profile, a web 2.0 property or through a signature.

Yes, these links do get seen by people and if your anchor text is written creatively with your keyword phrase you will get many people clicking on your links.
  • You can't be completely against backlinking. You sure have a bunch in your sig. If you think you can rank with just internal optimizing and good content, then the good news for the rest of us is that we have one less competitor. I wish you the best of luck, so I would advize reading around and finding a system that works for you. You could start by using every system you just listed thoroughly. Put all of your above statements to good use with a plan and you can eventually rank for any term out there.

  • Thanks bgmacaw for your support.

I'm not bashing backlinking at all. I just think that ppl should spend more time producing quality AND optimized web pages for their site(s).

Yeah, sure - get some quality backlinks - but I don't think that should be the focus of their campaign.

    • I think bgmacaw was using a little sarcasm here !!
Translation: Please dont worry about getting Backlinks because they are about 90% of the game in getting ranked in the SERPS and this means one less competitor!!!
  • Annette if I could, could I please ask you what type of backlinking methods do you use.

    Thanks Dave
  • Make that #54

  • Try to make backlinks using dofollow blogs.
  • Very Very TRUE!.. Optimizing a site is better than spending time for backlinks :-) Backlinks will come naturally!

  • Hello everybody. I am new here.

I have a quick question. What is the best (most effective) method to build up back links?
  • It is great to see that you are more concerned in giving quality content to the readers. But the fact is that backlinks have still got the power in bringing a site to the top of the SERP.
