OK, lets say you have a 4 letter search term that has good monthly search. When you pull the top 2 pages in Goggle and look at the links that Goggle shows on page 1 & 2, some of those website pages shown have very few backlinks for that page. However, if you look at the websites total backlinks they have millions. How hard is it to get ranked for that keyword term?

For example, lets say you look at a keyword and Target (the store) has a product listed. That page may only have less than 25 backlinks for it, but Target.com has hundreds of thousands if not millions of backlinks to the whole website. Is it impossible to get ranked for that search term when you see that?

I ask because I ran into a highly searched keyword with all top 20 links having less than 75 backlinks for that page, however the websites have tens of thousands of total backlinks. Is this a good search term if I want my website shown for that keyword? Does the websites total backlinks matter that much?

I know that they will have more authority, but my website will have the keyword in the domain, seo optimized, articles and directories submitted, etc. How will I fair against them if my website totals 300 backlinks, but that page has over 200?

I guess what I'm asking is what matters more, page backlinks for ranked page for that keyword or total websites backlinks?

I look forward to any responses!

Thank you!

Adam

It is true that "authority" sites can throw up pages and get them ranked much faster. That doesn't mean that other sites can't get ranked. What matters most is the quality of the links pointing to the site. For example, if the target.com homepage points to the page you are trying to outrank, its going to be tough to beat them. For more competitive key phrases, quality is going to be more important than quantity on the incoming links.

If you're properly targeting the phrase, then you should be able to rank along side or even above a behemoth site. While the larger site has more authority, it is unlikely they are actually targeting the same phrase you are.

Make sure you're checking the competition on your phrase in quotes. Does the huge site still show up on an exact match search? If not, then they're not targeting the same phrase, which gives you a much better chance of out ranking them.

If you are more specific with your keywords you wouldn't have to have close to that link before beating the site on the serp.

Try also to vary your keywords.
