Google Indexing/Backlinking Question

This will be a no brainer question to most of you with a lot of experience.

Once a website or blog is ready for the Internet, do you wait to see where Google initially ranks the site before using off site ranking methods, such as backlinking, Social media, etc?
OR
Do you just go ahead and start with off site ranking techniques immediately to give the website or blog a big boost right at the start? Or does this flag Google and it takes much longer to get a good ranking?

Is either way more beneficial than the other in Google's eye?

I understand that in order to see if your site is indexed, just type the URL in the Google search box. But I am not sure what is the best strategy once that indexing has occurred.

Any help is much appreciated.

Unfortunately it's not that black and white as your question implies.

What you want to do once your site is indexed is add content and links Slowing at first at least within the first 3 months. Google loves content so it can't hurt your rankings. Now when you add content you want to anchor text a link of that text with a variation of your target keyword to your homepage/domain name.

when it comes to backlinking you want to focus on what will look NATURAL to Google. If google sees a brand new site with a ton of high PR backlinks from authority sites right away it will usually sandbox you site for 3-6 months and you will be stuck without any traffic. so focus on a getting several different backlinks from a few quality places. And do it slowly as Google pays close attention to this part of the process esspecially with a new site.

Here's what I suggest you do Launch the site. Once indexed add content one week. Then add backlinks the second. then see where Google has your site ranking. If it's not ranking where you want it add more content and more backlinks but you MUST DO IT SLOWING AND AIM AT MAKING IT LOOK NATURAL TO GOOGLE.

hope this helps and makes sense

Ah....Great advice, thank you! I was afraid I might be rushing it a bit
Got a blog going. Added content about every 3rd day but went ahead and did a Squidoo lens, Hubpage and a bunch of backlinks from high quality sites almost right after that.
I bet that is why I'm not seeing the site move up in the rankings. It looks like it's still indexed but it ain't going anywhere from what I can tell.

      This is good advice...Thanks!

    I disagree with Heat.

I build from the beginning (article marketing, social bookmarking, other backlinking methods which are top secret.. ha!)

I'm not sure what people consider "slow and natural". Something that goes viral is never "natural". You can't predict stuff like that. And neither can Google.

Now, I'm not saying build 10K links in one day. But I'm not saying not to either.

All of your links that you build are not going to be indexed immediately. Some NEVER will be. So, even though you may build 250 links per day, that doesn't mean Google's going to index those 250 links that same day. Never, ever, never, ever going to happen. Ever. Did I say never?

You know, I've had over 800 links built in a day, to a brand-new website (ask James . I've never gotten a time out (err sandboxed). Ever. Never.

    Where's James?

LOL .. Right here Brandi ....

Please someone tell me what "natural link building" means ... seriously I am not kidding, I want someone to tell me what it means..

Facts : You can build 1,000 links the minute your site goes live, no need to wait for google to index anything. Start building the minute it goes live and do it in as many places as possible. No pr does not matter, no do follow and no follow does not matter.. Just get out there and start marketing it, do not spam but market it.

You can send out a press release the minute your site goes live. Use PRWeb or many other sites. Press Releases or News Releases will get you hundreds if not thousands of backlinks in a very short time and I am talking within hours.

Blast out social bookmarking on all your pages of your site just make sure to bookmark other similiar sites, funny sites, childrens sites, news sites, and etc in between your links.. Use the 80/20 rules - 80% other sites and 20% your sites.

Brandi is correct you can build hundreds and even thousands of links in one day and never be hurt. Fact is google or any other search engine cannot be in all places 24/7/365 - This is impossible for them to monitor billions of sites every single sec of every day.

I have build 5,000 and even 10,000 "natural" links to a site in one day with no problems at all.. Do not listen to those that say build links slow because they have no idea what they talk about. If you sit there and build 20 links a day then your competition is going to eat you alive ..

YES! James said it best right here: "If you sit there and build 20 links a day then your competition is going to eat you alive .."

And, nothing is worse than getting behind in linkbuilding. Seriously. You can make it up... but, start out building hard from the get-go and you'll not go wrong.

This is exactly what I've been doing and thought it might be overkill right at the start. Social bookmarking, I've booked I don't know how many Angela and Paul's backlinks, Hubpage, Squidoo lense,.etc.....and James is working on something for me.
Why that dang site won't move up the ladder is beyond me! I thought I'd pissed Google off...LOL
