Do you think this would work?

My site will host a webcomic of my own creation. There will be little or no text on the page itself so I think Adwords might get its info on what kind of ads to place based on the meta tag keywords. Is that assumption right?

Secondly, I don't want to show ads for webcomics, but rather the free online gaming niche, as I know my demographic is a huge fan of free online games. For that reason, should the first assumption be correct, should I fill the meta tags with keywords relating to free online games? I am not relying on SEO for traffic. As a webcomic artist, the only way I expect to get top rank in the search engine is if they know of my comic by word of mouth, reputation or other advertising means.

  • Meta tag keywords. Not likely.

A search engine has to read the content of your page somehow. So if you want relevant links you need to focus on relevant content. THEN get some links to and from relevant content.

What you are proposing is to display one thing, then expect ads for another. Unless you are placing the ads by hand yourself it's not going to happen. Unless of course you are using YPN which can't target ads period.

All major search engines are lowering the weighting of Meta tags due to meta tag spamming. Without much content on the page you will have to pay a high CPC to keep your advert live.

I work for PartyPoker as a PPC associate and met with google recently who specifically told me that all gaming stuff is manually reviewed so you ads may not even go live

A site without much content will not be very much liked by Google.

I would skip AdSense since it can't show ads that don't match your content. There are a ton of gaming CPA offers that your could use or even affiliate offers to use as well.

I agree with Kurt. Also you can use all of the FREE social media outlets to to push traffic to your site via some of your webcomic content.
