Hi all,

I'm a new member as you see and been lurking around for 8 months. Trying to make my way into IM but didn't take action yet. Still working on my first website.

Well, I'm a bit shy in nature (even on internet) so it's not easy for me to raise a question here. But this one I must ask.

I was with friends for a dinner out tonight. I knew they were working on a website in a tough niche for the last month and asked them how it's going. The answer shocked me and I got excited. They said their website is on the page 1 of Google for the their keywords. Out of 31,400,000 websites. I was shocked because they published this website just 2 weeks ago.

Well the keywords are in their domain name and description. But still... I checked myself and it outranks many established magazine sites, well-known blogs etc. Again, this niche is very tough.

I'm a total newbie and I've read tons of inspirational stories. If my friends will be successful with this website, they'll be my no 1 heroes.

But... should I be that excited? Or, is this a temporary thing? What do you say?

Without knowing the niche or the level of competition it's hard to answer, but my guess is that their site is very well optimized on page for SEO and Google is giving it lot's of love because it is fresh It may drop at any time, particularly if they stop adding content or building backlinks.

Many times a site will shoot up in the rankings just due to freshness. Especially if you are using bookmarking sites to help your rankings. The thing regardless of the niche is to make sure that it stays there. (unless you are trying to capitalize on a quick launch)

I have had rakings been out 3-400k competition in 14 minutes, but drop of in a few hours.

Also, If they continue to build onto that site, and continue having more and more media linking to it, they can keep it up there. Good Luck to your friends and yourself.

it can be done. To rank high is not a challenge, to keep it in time is a different animal.

like was said above, without more information it's hard to say

I do want to point out that "page 1 of Google for the their keywords. Out of 31,400,000 websites" is incorrect. People who throw out these kinds of numbers fail to understand how google works.

google will only return 1,000 pages max for any search query. the over-inflated number may be the number of pages indexed by google that contain the search term but it's not a very accurate means of measuring your competition.

to get a better idea of how many pages you are really competing against is:
    1. in the advanced settings set your results to return 100 results per page
    2. enter in your search and then click on page 10
    3. These are results 901 - 1,000
    4. Take note of what the total results are
    5. chances are it's less than 1,000 and in some cases may only be a few hundred
for example, do a search for 'dog', the initial google results are around 325,000,000 but refine the search and you'll find that google only returns 985 pages. These are the pages that google finds relevant to your search. The remaining 324,999,015 are irrelevant since google does not see them as relevant and are not competition for the keyword 'dog'

Thank you for the replies guys. Well I feel a bit guilty because I'm spying on friends' site. Just checked their backlinks and it's 32. Isn't this a low number? Most of the backlinks are from a blog directory. I know they didn't purchase backlinks (but thinking of it as they say). They paid only for hosting and domain. No Adwords etc. for visitor clicks.

Liam, they are in weight loss niche. Not a sub niche in wl but they're writing general stuff. Maybe it's a good time of the year for wl niche.

Well I'll follow them and see if they drop or not.

And one more question if you guys care to answer... What would be a good visitor number for such a site in 2 weeks? And for a dating niche site? (as I'm working on my dating site). Hmm, it's a generic question isn't it?

You have to be careful because if you keep looking at it then Google will tell you your site is on top when in actual fact it is not.

This is because of their local searching and how you have your browser set up.

In this forum lots of people tell us their site is on top but when we go look at it the fact is it is not.

Pm me and I will check. I doubt if it really is.

if it's weight loss they are probably receiving a fresh content boost and will soon disappear down the black hole of the google abyss.

your question just brings up more questions... #1 for dating, around 700k a day. #1 for eskimo dating, probably 0 hits a day.

Dating is a very bad niche, even if you know what you're doing. There is a lot of money to be made in the dating niche but you are dealing with serious competition.

Wow thanks to you guys I'm learning new things every day!

Jason, I used your methods (turned 759 results) and surely I will use them for my future searches. Never had an idea about this. I don't know Google tricks and to be honest I usually fall for big numbers. Next step for me before publishing my site is to try understand Google better, promise

Jeff, thanks. Dunno about friends but I need luck much more than anytime nowadays.

When sites are new, if they are built properly (which it sounds like it is) they will typically show up on the top of Google's results.

Then it will fade away and disappear.

Will it return? Depends on outside SEO techniques like backlinks.

How much traffic he got from page 1 position?

I know a friend who got to 1st position on first week but that's on keyword that many people will not actually search for, so he got like 2-3 clicks per day.
