There seems to be two sides of the EDU debate.

One side thinks that the SE's regard these domains as high "authority" sites and any backlinks coming from them are weighted higher than from other domains. Apparently GOV also falls into this category.

I agree with the other side that thinks they're as useful as any other type of backlinks, considering all things equal with the PageRank formula. So I wouldn't waste your time searching for EDU domains to get backlinks from

I can't tell you much more than what khtm and ruch1v told you, but what I can tell you is any .gov or .edu in the serps are nearly impossible to move, but if you can get backlinks from these sites it will help your rankings skyrocket.

I stumbled across this site and it has a list of 22 Do Follow .edu and .gov sites you can signup for to put backlinks on, if you thought this helped don't be shy and hit thanks

here is the site: wowhaxor's Blog DoFollow .GOV/.EDU Auto Approved (Instant) Backlinks

its .edu (check your title) and they are seen as an authority link with high value, its difficult (rare) to get a .edu linking to your site, so when it does, the search engines assume your site will be a good quality one aswell and reward you for it

edu/gov link is very good and weighed highly in rank computation.. it makes a lot of sense too... edu/gov has no commercial interest in linking to your site.. that means if they link to you.. your website is genuinely of high quality... then there are quite a few incidents of edu link fraud as some marketers were able to buy the link and point them to less savvy sites and cause university great deal of embarrassment

.edu/.gov are non profits like schools or government organizations. That's why they are so heavy on the link juice

The only time I have ever had a link it was because of my alumni association. It was unexpected but cool

I thought I remember seeing Matt Cutts from Google mention that .edu were not super special. I go for a couple here and there just to add some diversity to my backlinking but I don't think they are magical. there are a lot of .edu blogs up that are easy to get backlinks from. if you really want to spend your time getting some search deep and find a blog post that already has Page Rank and not many comments on it - (they are out there) - the lack of many comments makes your backlink more valuable because there isn't much link juice spilled.

If the edu site has a decent level of authority, it can help you just like any other authority site can. It's really no better or no worse than a .com site that has authority.

However, if it is a heavily spammed, "Free For All" linking, monstrosity like this, Baylor Law School Blog - Discussions, Events, Tips , don't count on it being too helpful in your link building efforts in spite of it being a .edu domain.

Google seems to love .edu / .gov / .org domain then the usual .com ones. This trend is of recent origin and everyone is after that. Google seems to take backlink from these domain more seriously then others.

.org is less so because anyone can have an .org name registered.. edu/gov is different
