Why or Why are THEY on Google page #1?

I'm trying a new campaign to get to page #1 of Google for keywords "Orlando website design" and was checking out my competition.

Listed at #6 is a site called griffinkingdom.com. Results from keyword Spy show:

06 | [object Object] | Alexa Rank: 5,766,336 | Google Cached: ? | Google Cache Date: ? | Domain Age: 01-2007 | Y! Cached: 0 | Live Cached: - | Y! Links: 131 | Y! .edu Links: 0 | Y! .gov Links: 0 | Y! Why has such a poorly backlinked site which hasn't been around for long made it to the front page??

Any ideas?

Thanks

When one gets to understand it all doesn't revolce around how many backlinks you have, one begins to understand how to effectively rank their content. To get that understanding may take a long time due to the ever growing misleading teachings in the SEO world.

      Very true....

From just a cursory view (in addition to what was stated
in the previous posts, the site in question...

      -Is listed in the DMOZ
      -Has a sitemap
      -Good internal linking

Interesting case-study. Just goes to show that quality counts. Notice that a lot of their links are coming from websites that are "Orlando such and such...", which means they're more relevant. Also, even though many competitors in these SERPs have 10,000 links+, I wonder how many of them actually have the right anchor: "Orlando Web Design", and how many of them are targeting broader keywords like "Web Design".

you should rather take this as a good sign that you can rank this too! ALL of the sites for this keyword have rather "meh" on-site SEO, and the griffin guy has only 117 backlinks. You might be easily able to outrank them.

So true. If you want to know how they rank so high go to the actual Google webmasters site and learn what makes sites rank high. NOT what you hear on random blogs and other venues. There's just so much bad advice being given out that it's hard to sift out the true stuff from the rumors.

This is a low competition niche as regional niche's usually are. Orlando is a relatively smaller city and top web designers don't go after regional business as web design has a global reach. Shouldn't be too hard to get in there but it may take some time with a new domain. I chalk it up almost entirely to the low competition of the term. It doesn't even have a wealth of content. Just 6 or 7 short pages so those talking about superior content (which is ALWAYS important) are not on target if thats all they are looking at.

Yeah, competition is quite low here so you are going to see websites rank high that maybe have not been optimized.

Google is always changing their algo to prevent those spammers. They don't want anyone who could cheat them easily. Targeting to be on the top will need more hard work not only lots of backlinks, and traffic, but good content as well.

Many have touched on the problem, but have not offered a clear solution.

Folks that sell SEO products want you to believe that Google is some HUGE mystery.

Just do a little "reverse engineering" and you can easily see "How" this site is ranking on the first page.

Also, the "bright side" is that your site is "climbing" the ranks for this phrase.

Previously, you were #50, now you are #37. That's a whole page and a half difference.

My suggestion to you would be to place your backlinks on different sites.

You have lots of backlinks, but many are from forums. This creates an inflated view of your backlinks and Google can see right through it.

Griffin has fewer backlinks in all, but they are nearly all from different sites and nearly all of them have the exact phrase "Orlando Website Design" in the Anchor text.

Your achor text varies from "Orlando Web Design" to "Orlando Website Design", so they still have you beat on the number of keyword anchor text backlinks.

Also, put "Orlando Website Design" in your Title. The word "website" doesn't appear in your content at all. You'll need more keyword density.

Lastly, it appears that your original phrase "Orlando Web Design" receives about 3 times as many searches. You might do better focusing on that phrase again first. You are currently #59 on that phrase.

Google ranking is Simple, but we won't confuse Simple with Easy. It takes work and you have to know what to do.

But, Google gives you all the clues and anyone that follows them will rank well. There are a lot of Free Tools out there that will help you.

Hopefully, you and everyone else can pull some nuggets from this.

      Best of Luck....
