Variations in keywords for domain

Hi all,

I've come across a niche that I would love to exploit (kinda like a Google Sniper-type site), but I am wondering about the domain name. I know that it's best to have the keyword in the domain name, but I'm wondering if a variation still counts the same with Google with regards to hyphens.

For example, If I'm trying to target "Large Scale Widgets" and largescalewidgets.com, .net and .org are taken, would it be just as easy to do large-scalewidgets.com and would Google still recognise it the same?

The funny thing is, when I did a domain search for largescalewidgets.com, it said that it was taken, but when I enter the address in Google, it says that it can't find it. Also, when I did an SEOC matrix in Market Samurai, the keyword was almost absent from the top ten (ie they were mostly merchant sites)

So, could anyone tell me if it would still be worth going for the hyphenated domain name? Things get really frustrating for me as I'm beginning to think that all the good .com names have been taken !

Thanks !

  • A lot of domains are registered and not even parked.

As far as hyphens go they will work. I have used them just fine in the past. But they are not very good for branding.

If you can avoid them you should. But if you can do a good job of SEO then go for it.

There are so many things that are more important to ranking than just a keyword domains. The boost is helpful not so much because of Google but for another less obvious reason. When people link to you or your site gets scraped the keywords are in your anchor text.
