Hey Guys & Gals,

If you use Adsense on your sites, you might want to take a look at this short video I made about how to do "down and dirty" keyword research to find some good keywords to target. It's all about finding the higher paying keywords so you can max out your per-click earnings. I usually do what's in this video as a first step to quickly decide if a niche is worth chasing. Might be handy for those of you who are newer to all of this.

Thanks for the video, a good start for beginners.

I've never really got my head around this method of assessing competition. In my mind, the number of websites that are returned for a phrase is irrelevant as your only really competing with the top 10 pages that are returned for that keyword.

If the top 10 are all PR7 pages with 1000's of backlinks, you've got next to no chance of making any money from that keyword regardless of if there are 1,000 pages returned when you quotation search or 1,000,000 pages!

Yes, you don't want to stop with what I present in the video. After you do these preliminary checks, then you want to dig deeper. If you see a some Web 2.0 sites in the Top 10, that's a good sign. Sites like EzineArticles, Hubpages, YouTube videos, etc. Those usually show up in the Top 10 simply from the power of the parent site's authority status. So you can put something up on those same sites, apply some backlinks, and probably outrank them a majority of the time. Or even put up a page on your own site, as long as it's established and you get some powerful backlinks to it.

The reason I first look at the competition numbers within quotation marks is that from my experience I don't see a lot of vulnerability in the Top 10 when doing searches for heavily searched phrases. You'll see the occasional EZA page or video there, but usually not more than one in the Top 10. Whereas with lesser searched phrases that have 50,000 or less competing pages when doing a search in quotation marks, you'll often see more than one Web 2.0 property in the Top 10.
