Google Sandbox Question

So I've got a site that has been sandboxed for a keyword that I am trying to rank for.

My question is what have you done in the past to get your site out of the sandbox for that term?

Kept building backlinks for it?
Built more diverse links?
Just waited a while until it came out?
Something else?

Please tell me about your experiences with this. Thanks!

      Depends on what Sandboxed means.

If sight is deindexed then check your content (duplicated or keyword stuffed?) and your backlinking methods. (white hat?) No personal experience yet on a deindexed sight.

If sight is still indexed but is nowhere to be found join the club. I have several that have disappeared after some backlinking but one has ended up on page 1 position 1 for it's keyword phrase recently. It happens to be one of my older sites (5 months). In my experience, for a sight that is not deindexed it is best to just wait, especially if it can't be found. It'll show back up in a few weeks hopefully. I have found when a site disappears, the more I backlink to try to get it back where it was, the longer it takes to come back! Just my experience.

It goes on to the vase scene which is equally zen and also applicable to this situation...

Sandbox is where you use that keyword to rank high in the search engines where it's not yet used or has a low search volume or competition, but you immediately use it for some quick methods to rank you high, and in a matter of days or weeks you are ranked below. That's is how I understand about Google Sandbox.

From what I understand a good way to check it is to do

    allintitle:keyword phrase
    allinurl:keyword phrase
    allinanchor:keyword phrase

If your site shows in the top 20 for all those, but no where in the top 1000 for the phrase. Then you are sandboxed. Is this true?

Just keep updating your pages with new content and build backlinks. Obviously for the term you want but try some variations of the term as well just incase Google thinks your spamming.
Also be patient. Even if a site is perfect etc its still new and it will take time for Google to rank it.

No, it's not true. There is no 'sandbox'. What you're seeing is the natural value of the links your site has. Apparently, they aren't too valuable.

I would recommend just taking your time and expecting it to possibly be sandboxed for a couple pr updates or so. Focus on developing content and slowly building proper links for your desired keywords. In time you should start ranking.

Usually when a page or site disappears for a keyword something either has changed in the content (duplicate?) or the backlinks to it. If you've done a heavy backlink campaign Google can drop you or take you out several days until it figured out your proper ranking - especially if the backlink campaign is fishy looking and abruptly. In that regard its better to keep juicing your keyword backlinks steadily over time than all at once.

I've experienced a few of my new sites getting the Google sandbox quite often that I now accept it as a passing phase. Just continue with backlinking so that when you are out of it the site goes to higher search engine ranking. Also build more sites so that you will always have some sites that have been out of "probation" period.

I would just wait until it comes out. Why waste time on something that requires a lot of you're time and energy when you have less chances of it working out (it's in the sandbox)...

Just work on a different term and when the page is out of the sandbox and ranking again then go for it.

There is no way that only one page that is stuck is not ranking is preventing you from making $$$ right?

So why focus on what's not working? Focus on what has better chances of success.

Whenever I see a SEO question like this I know two things are possible:

    1. The answer may be correct, or it may not be correct

    2. No one is sure since Google will not tell us.

As mentioned above, just put up the best content you can. Try to make it as original as possible. Don't worry that much about keywords. They will naturally come through if you (or someone very knowledgable about your niche) writes the article.

Here is a link that may help you. Search simple in quotes: "Is there a google sandbox"

If you suspect that your page is in the sandbox try to see the top 10 titles in Google results. Maybe they use the keyphrase only once in the title and you use it twice and Google thinks you're spamming or it just not natural enough. Change it to be similar to what you see in the top 10 and you'll be safe when it comes to the title tag.

Im pretty sure it's sandboxed because I built too many backlinks when it first went live. About 3000 links.

      *) What is the Sandbox?

Opinions vary whether the Sandbox actually exists. Matt Cutts in the past once "kind of" admitted that "...there are search engine algorithms in place which could be interpreted as a sandbox effect..." [freely cited]

The sandbox is thought of as a mechanism which is supposed to prevent newly created sites to gain high rankings quickly by simple doing extensive SEO and backlinking right after a site has been made.

The philosophy behind is that it should be impossible for spammers and SEOs to quickly rank new sites that way for whatever keywords.

When a site is in the sandbox it would simply rank way behind in the SERPs, similar to the Google Dance effect. For example it would rank on page #100, while the keywords, backlinks SEO etc. would otherwise indicate it should rank way higher. But as with the "Google Dance" effect, the site itself is still in Google's index.

The common assumption is that a site can get into this "sandbox" by overdoing it with SEO and linkbuilding on a new site, eg. when the number of backlinks is unnatural in relationship to the site's age.

It is thought that a typical sandbox penalty phase for a site can last from 3 months to 6 months, and once a site is in the sandbox there is no way out other than waiting it out.

It is said that high quality sites usually "enjoy" only 3 months sandbox penalty why lower quality sites can be in the sandbox for up to 6 months.

It is also said that the best thing to do in case your site has been sandboxed is to add good and relevant content and backlinks which might speed-up and shorten the time it has to spend in the sand-box
Thanks George, I'll wait it out and focus on some of my other sites for a while to see how this plays out.

The good thing about this is the site is still making money from all the longtail traffic it is getting

The Google Sandbox is a name given to an observation about the way Google ranks web pages in its index.Google's page ranking by creating lots of inbound links to a new web site from other web sites that they own.

he Sandbox is a phenomenon that people have claimed to observe in the ranking of web pages.A filter affect that Google places on new domains to stop the website from high rankings for the main keywords.

      Hi GazD,

There are a couple of Google Sandboxes that have nothing to do with SEO or ranking in the SERP. They are used by developers for testing (see: Google checkout).

There is something that folks often refer to as the "Sandbox Effect" which is a term that was coined after Matt Cutts clarified there is no "Sandbox" but there is an "effect" that creates the results some folks perceive as "being in a sandbox".

He went on to explain that older pages will tend to rank higher because they have earned more trust simply because they have stood the test of time. The only way to overcome the so called "Sandbox Effect" is to allow time to pass.

Since there is nothing you do to cause this effect there is nothing you need to do to avoid it. Once you understand this you should realize that it exists and to expect it, but you should never allow it to change your behavior.

My advice to you is to stop wasting your time and energy trying to overcome something that requires nothing more than the passing of time to overcome.

Sometimes I have had the sandbox happen when there are not enough internal and external links happening. Also, some blogging templates are less SEO friendly (they are not equally as SEO friendly, even with SEO plug-ins) and Google has a hard time picking up the right information on the pages, and thus sandboxes the pages.
