Adwords Testing Help

I'm using adwords to test keywords for accurate search volume. I'm an adwords novice, so I was wondering in the impressions section, is the impressions you're ad is getting or impressions the keyword is getting?

If it's just the keyword my ad is getting, then does that mean I have to bid the minimum recommended amount per click to get more impressions, to see how many people search the keyword?

  • I feel like an idiot asking this question... But impressions = your impressions right? Which means I have to bid high enough to hit the first page to get the number of searches for a specific keyword?
  • An impression is when your ad was served, shown. If your ad appears on the second page, an impression is counted when the user actually went to that page and was exposed to your ad.

    If you want to know how many times people searched on your keywords, there is a field in the Campaign and Account performance reports called Impression Share which is expressed as a percentage. It aggregates at the group and campaign levels, not keywords or ads.
