Finding the real number of backlinks...

...is really harder than commonly assumed.

Yes, we all know those sites like backlinkwatch, yahoo site explorer etc.

3rd party sites MOST of the time use Yahoo site explorer's API since it is assumed that yahoo site explorer is the only way to "accurately" get an idea about backlinks.

But i see that this is simply not the case, as far as i see in yahoo site explorer (and thus also on backlinkwatch, metafever etc.)...yahoo site explorer counts also duplicate links.

For example, you have forum links on ONE forum, and forum links can be quite many if you have a link in your signature. But they are all from ONE domain so i don't think they count if you have 200 links all coming from one domain, but yahoo lists them and tell you you have 200 backlinks.

Then we have a number of backlinks as seen in alexa, or Google, or what Google webmaster tools says. I found that getting a REAL idea about relevant backlinks (for google rankings) is NOT that easy.

Maybe I'm just being really dumb here, but how do you check backlinks with alexa?

You can use Alexa to view "inlinking" sites.

I usually use Yahoo site Explorer to check backlinks for sites I don't own. If I own the site, I'll use Google Webmaster Tools. Bing also has good webmaster tools.

I never even noticed that on Alexa, lol, thanks. Market Samurai has a real nice backlink check that sorts them based on PR, btw

Duplicate links from the same site do effect your or other peoples sites in a positive way but just less than before, plus often some of them have a higher PR than the other pages that you have your link on.

There is another tool but i really can't remember it's name right now however it still doesn't give all the backlinks that the yahoo site explorer does but does not give 'duplicate' backlinks.

LOL I thought I was the only one that gets obsessive on that. First thing I do in the morning is run through google, bing, yahoo to check my backlinks, then turn on market samurai and seo spyglass. Then I spend about 10 minutes cursing at my computer because I always feel there should be more. I should probably just not check them daily, or see a therapist or something.

MS uses yahoo's? It shows more backlinks than site explorer does, but fewer than google webmaster tools, so that's kind of odd.
