Hi.

Is it better to have backlinks from high page ranking but unrelated websites or low page ranking related websites?

Thanks.

Jim.

  • Generally I'd say it's better for the pages that you get links from to be related, less of a chance of getting a penalty that way from Google.

    • Say What ???? Now if that is not about a load of crap.. What penalty, google going to beat you up because you are posted on a non-related site :confused:

Oh by the way remove the affiliate link in your sig ...

OP : PR means nothing, ignore it ... Go and post anyplace and everyplace you can..

    • Sorry, neither Alexa's nor SEOProScott's answers are correct.
      1. A site can be about many different topics, so relevance is determined per pair of pages (origin and target of a link). It matters very little if at all what the site is about.
      2. If the anchor text and potentially the surrounding text around the link on the origin page are relevant to the target page, then the link is considered relevant.
      3. It is often possible for a link from a low PR page to be more valuable than a link from a high PR page. The way this happens is if the high PR page has many more outlinks than the low PR page, then the amount of "link juice" flowing along each outlink on the high PR page is lower than that flowing along outlinks on the low PR page.
All of that is neither here nor there. A link is a link is a link is a link. You want as many as possible. If you can drop a link, do it.

  • I'm going to go ahead and vote for 'both'.

    • And that would be the correct vote Every opportunity to get a link back to your site, ... take it with both hands!
  • Agreed with Joe here.

A link is a link is a link!

However, there is some truth that posting in a page from a high PR site will result in a 'higher quality' link.

This is because higher PR sites tend to have much more 'link traffic' and more web pages, allowing it to gain it's high PR from Google with it's popularity and high traffic.

As PR actually spreads itself from the main site to all it's pages, having a link on a page of a high PR site will receive some of the "PR" love that is passed down from the main site.

It may sound confusing, but basically, it's all about layers.

For example, if website A (www.websitea.com) had a page rank of say 5 and you were to post a link on the profiles pages of website A (www.websitea.com/profiles), then your backlink on the profile page is gonna be quite a quality one as the profile page is only one layer (/profiles/) away from the main page that is PR 5.

That is NOT to say that the profiles page of Website A is PR 4! But it still has the effects of being so close in layers to the main website with PR 5.

I did not make this up myself by the way: learnt this from the 'Art of SEO' (I think) :p).

    • Using a tool like SEO Spyglass or Yahoo Explorer, I was surprised at how many PR0 links websites have. I would says 80% of the links to a website ranking for #1 for my keyword were PR0. Not saying that is the best way, but it seems to be the most popular way.
  • I think people should think less of pagerank and more of relevancy. If you get good links from relevant pages it will pay off.
  • Whats up with penalties they really do not exist! Its like a billion dollar myth by now lol.
Anyways relevant sites will be better because they stand a better chance to drive traffic from the sites you are adding the backlinks to. But if you just want random backlinks well then it really does not matter.

    • I'm using the backlink packages that I purchasing
here on the warrion forum. I'm seeing links coming
      back to my sites.

Most of these are non related sites. Just start
your own testing. That's my advise.
  • Thanks for posting. I was slapped by google in the past and if I had used a multi strategy system the effects wouldn't have been so bad
  • Just mix it up a little. Recent testing has proved to me that relevant, decent PR ppage backlinks can increase rankings tremendously... and .. quickly! When I say decent PR pages, I mean PR2 - PR4.

My advice though is to mix it up a little. Even throw in a few nofollow links to show a naural linking pattern.

Don't stick ALL yur eggs in one basket.
  • Links is links - go forth an build them.

    • Hi,

According to me it is always better to get backlinks from relevant sites as, it can be more beneficial, but if you are getting backlinks from irrelevant source than there is no harm as such.

But, if you are getting maximum backlinks through irrelevant source than in that case it may penalize your site.

      Thanks
