Hi all.

I've just watched 2 interesting videos on YouTube about back links.

Basically, the videos explained that no back link checking tool can accuratley tell you how many links a site has coming back to it.

If you're interested the videos are here:

Basically, it explains that the tools all use the search engines for their data but that the search engines openly state that they will only show a portion of a sites back links.

Would just like to get some feedback on this from everyone :-)

That might be true for search engines but it's not true for all tools.

Some of the things they say in their other videos are different from what my test have found - they're saying the same things people on the forum say in general.

      Hi Andyhenry.

      Thanks for your input.

Yeah, it's certainly a confusing subject with lots of conflicting views.

I have always used SEO for Firefox and DNScoop to check backlinks.

Not sure how accurate that is now.

Do you have any particular tools that you use?

The thing with backlinks, it doesn't HAVE to be confusing.

We can make it far more simple.

Google is set up to care about the links that people would care about, right?

If a link gets clicked, apart from a vanishingly small percentage, it is going to register as a referrer.

And a good percentage of the best links you know about it through word of mouth, Google alerts, or have set up the link yourself

If a link simply exists (in a sidebar, footer, hub site, directory) and is never going to send a single visitor, then Google is unlikely to give it much weight, if at all

Only link building consultants or very hard core analytical SEO type folks need to worry about the exact number of links you have pointing to a page, the rest of us should focus our energy on getting authority links.

I agree with most of that, but there are advantages to knowing exactly how many links you have and where they come from ( and being able to check easily)

Not least of which is that you want to be able to test and track how many people link to pages that are yours or that link to you (there are several reasons for that alone), or to confirm that outsourced work was done (or is still done if you think they may be undoing/changing links later).

I agree that for most people they shouldn't give this stuff too much thought as it's time they could usefully spend on more productive things, but it's not unreasonable to consider what the reality of your link situation is.

Just to clarify - I am primarily interested in the best backlinking strategies for SEO purposes.

I thought it was commonly known that Google only report accurately on about 5% of the backlinks out there (and then after a struggle) and Yahoo about 20-25%

That's right - it is possible to hide backlinks from ever showing.

The best strategy is to go to as many sites, forums etc within your niche and add your link. Once Google sees over time that you are making the effort you will be rewarded.

Link back to your website from other websites everyday. A couple of new sites a day adds up over a couple of months.
If you have an RSS Feed put it into the Aggregators. Your same link can now be shown with another URL. Two links out of one.
Backlinking services can do it for you as well.
You need to look natural. Does it make sense that 1000's of people will want to link to a one page niche site?
Backlinks are a vote from another website for your website in the eyes of the search engines.
Ad content to your site which would be links you could run through aggregators.
