SEO Rant -Thoughts welcome

Hey all,

I've recently been looking at some of the top 10 results (for the uk) for highly competitive keywords such as "seo" "search engine optimisation" "ppc management"..

Now while some sites in the serps are hubs of useful information the majority of them are just well designed websites...

Take for example BigMouthMedia, yes the site is well designed and looks good but does it have any really excellent content on it that compells you to link to it? I would suggest no..Yet the site ranks no1 for "search engine optimisation" in the UK.

I mean there is practically nothing on those sites that makes me want to link to them...It very clear that they have achieved there rankings by aggressive backlink building....Most of the sites are no more appealing than others they just happened to have acquired tens of thousands of links...

Now of course everybody is doing this to achieve good rankings, i just think its interesting that despite the lack of really engaging and compelling content on these sites they still rank really highly...

This leads me to believe that in spite of Google big thing about 'create good content and sites will naturally want to link to you' in acutal fact they don't care....

Links will always win and if you have enough you can dominate any search term...

Just my 2 cents anyway

    Thoughts welcome =D

Just noticed you spelled it wrong, it's search engine optimization <- with a Z

I also believe that google is trying to punish those with excellent content that would help others get past there algorithm xD

  • And once again... this just in... It's not about YOU or what you think. Clearly if they are ranking they are "Doing it Right".

So figure out what they are doing right so you can increase your ranking. Obviously the votes that count are not coming from you.

Everyone thinks their stuff is all that. But ultimately until you get over your own opinions and start looking at what matters you'll dwell in misery and self loathing.

I believe he was just trying to highlight the truth from what Google preaches and that content doesn't always win.

In regards to the keyword in the OP, web service providers are able to achieve a large quanity of links by adding a footer link or a note somewhere on the site highlighting what they provided. You can use the same technique for any niche if you are willing to cold canvas other site owners. Contact them and highlight some issues with their website and ask for a link somewhere on the site in exchange.

Content just plays one part in the total SEO picture. You got it right when you suggested that links win the day.

Links win the day, is true sadly, and it is what motivated me to purchase Scrapebox. I experimented a little with the blog comment thing and now have 1000 backlinks for a site I started one week ago.

If you don't believe me check it out at my Avmed site. Pretty interesting stuff, and surprisingly I am ranking very high for some pretty competitive, albeit niche phrases.

It makes me wonder what kind of SERP I would have if I seriously used this application for my main site. But I am indeed fearful of the "black arts."

I don't link to anybody unless they pay me. And it must be a site
that is directly related to the site they want it on.

I do have a small directory, however that they can submit links to.

I see no benefit to linking to anybody.

I don't care, but people do link to me. That is, people who are
not doing any SEO, don't care about SEO, are amateur webmasters
and like to add links to spiff up their site.
