Tracking conversions with AdWords Conversion Tracking, Website Optimizer and Google Analytics

We're gonna start testing our sales pages and other elements and I'd like to know how do you track conversions with all the different Google tools.

Google Analytics can track through goals.
AdWords tracks through their conversion tracking.
Website Optimizer tracks through analytics (?).

How do I setup everything so I can track conversions from PPC, SEO, paid traffic, etc.? I'd like to have one setup and view, preferrably only in Analytics. Do I just set up goals in Analytics and view statistics from there?

  • I won't even put analytics on my sites. Even worse, if using analytics with Adsense on your pages.

    Google knows far too much already.
  • Emm ... thanks for your input but that doesn't actually help me with my question, does it?

    I'm not using Adsense or building AS pages.

    • Here is some info that may help you.

      Step 1

      Setup Google Analytics on your website in general. This will track all traffic activity for your website regardless of where it comes from.

      Every website you own should have analytics of some form installed so you can track where your traffic is coming from.

      This helps you determine where you should focus more attention to get the most benefit for your efforts.

      Step 2

      For every PPC campaign that you run, setup Conversion tracking on the "thank you page" or page the person ends up on after they have completed the action you wanted from them on the landing page you originally sent them to with the original click.

      If you have Analytics on your site, this will also be tracked but Google (or any other PPC source) will only give you credit for the conversion if you have Conversion tracking setup on the proper page so they know that the person you sent via PPC to a landing page converted on the action you wanted from them.

      That is why conversion tracking and analytics are different.

      Step 3

      Setup goals inside Analytics to track how a user interacts with a specific sales process regardless of how they entered your site.

      For example, if you receive a visitor to a landing page from a free traffic source that you also use for PPC, the goal conversion process will track the path of the visitor no matter what.

      You can only setup Goals using Analytics, but if you also use Google for PPC then you can link your Adwords campaigns with your analytics to get even greater detail on your data.

      Note:

      At this point, you should go read up about all this stuff straight from Google. Just Google each of these and learn all about it.

      It will take some time to learn, but it is well worth it.

      The most valuable thing you can have related to traffic is data. The data tells you everything based on your efforts and with that you will be able to make more informed decisions.

  • Thanks, this will help a lot. I already use Analytics and Adwords CT, but here I'm looking for finding out the general conversion rate of a website. This is then best done with GA goals, right?

      This way, whatever means you are getting traffic to your website or offer, you can track the conversion rate.
