Hi.

When i'm doing keyword research I sometimes come across big websites such as amazon in the top spot and the keyword I targeted is on a page some where within that website.

Thing that confuses me is sites like amazon that have pr3 to 8 always seem to have lesser ranking pages inside that dont seem to have many links etc.

Is it still worth going after keywords with those kind of results?

  • To determine whether or not a keyword is worth going after requires you to look at a lot of different variables. How many pages are competing, domain age, backlinks to page, backlinks to domain, etc.

There are some good tools that can give you a quick preview of how much work a keyword would take. I'll admit that most of my understanding comes from the thirty day challenge and using Market Samurai. I've also heard that Google Sniper is a good program and will teach you the same stuff.

If you were asking for something more specific post a reply and I'll try again.
  • +1 to Market Samurai. Best tool I have used, ever.

Another tip is to check out the backlink anchor text of competing sites to see how hard they are targeting your desired keyword.
  • You can outrank pages like Amazon with a good long term linking strategy. Big sites usually rank high due to their high authority, so don't be afraid to attack the big guys. I also use Market Samurai for research and this usually helps to estimate the competitiveness of a phrase fairly quickly. Check out traffic travis as well.
  • - hence the reason I stopped being an Amazon affiliate.

    • If Amazon - or another authority site - is in the top spot, then it can be to your advantage. Most people already know those sites, so they skip down to less familiar sites to get "new" info. Your site placing in the top 7 is still a worthwhile goal.
  • You have to take each keyword on a separate analysis. It's definitely worth going after micro niches that can easily be beaten. You just have to beat them with more backlinks.
