Creating good anchor text is the secret to ranking high. Too many links with identical text will raise a flag. You need variety.

For example, let's says you create some 50's fashion pages.

You want to drive traffic to an information page about 50's slang.

So you create some terms.

50's slang words
slang phrases from the 1950's
50s terms
nifty fifty lingo
fifties sayings

Get the picture?

Google expects a lot of variety in the anchor text.

  • And how much is too much? I have sites ranking that I always use IDENTICAL KEYWORD anchor text.

I reverse engineer a lot of sites to see how they are ranking and it's very common for very large amounts of anchor text to be identical.

People like to speculate on what Google does or doesn't want, and Google is constantly changing.

So your speculative opinions are based on what facts? Anyone can say anything in the Forums which is exactly what I just said. And these are my opinions. And in my opinion based on my own experience ranking my portfolio of sites over the past 10 years well defined anchor text works great. Whereas if you stray too far off the path you end up confusing the search engines and dividing your efforts among too many keywords. Again this is my opinion. And this works for me and I have very high rankings on a number of sites in different niches.

Ranking is about a lot more than Anchor Text and Links. The Authority of the links coming back to your site will determine to a greater degree your ability to rank than the anchor text itself. This is why Wikipedia can rank so well in so many niches.

I agree, and use the same anchor tag text and have always ranked in the top three or so for years so that has stood the test of time for my sites at least.

At the same time, it's nearly impossible to say what factor(s) is better than another beyond perhaps volume of backlinks and authority of backlinks....there's simply too many variables and they change over time on top of that.

True... many SEO are opinions and they are NOT facts...Since SEO is a process of guessing or reverse engineering. Google remains a black box for us...

I don't know why you posted this comment but it is certainly misleading at the least. Couldn't disagree more. If I want a page to be known for one term, I never vary my anchor text. Many experts agree that not varying anchor text is actually the most effective method to the best rankings, though it may look the most unnatural.

Which experts? Many so-called experts are spinning a lot of junk information that has no proven evidence to show it works.

Often, experts are trying to pass of a technique they claim works without even knowing for sure if that technique really did work or caused the results they had. This is why when people try to duplicate the same technique... it doesn't work.

I'm not going to agree or disagree but I can dig up plenty of examples for both sides of the argument.

Here is a website that debunks the whole keywords for domain names and anchor text needed to rank for a keyword. In this case the keyword would be 't-shirts' and several other t-shirt related keywords.

Threadless graphic t-shirt designs; cool & funny t-shirts weekly! Tees designed by the community.

Obviously the domain name does not have the keyword in it and a quick look through their backlinks and you're not going to find 't-shirts' mentioned much at all.
