Directories Worth Anything for SEO?

I tried submitting some of my sites to a bunch of directories through a service a month ago. Through Backlink Checker, I have yet to see any links to the sites that look like they are from the directory submission appear.

Just wondering, are directory submissions worth the bother and do they count for anything with SEO? Would like to hear about your experiences.

Most are almost worthless. The only one's that carry weight are DMOZ (but good luck getting in) and Yahoo's directory (which you have to pay for). You are far better off spending your time and money generating backlinks from Web 2.0 sites.

Here's a tip on the Yahoo Directory. You have to pay an annual fee (around $300) to get listed but they don't typically remove your site if you don't renew.

Yahoo and DMOZ are the best. One google video does say that the weight of the link from a directory depends on how much reviewing the editors do before adding links to their directory.

With a few exceptions, they're pretty worthless since they're linking free-for-alls.

Searchnology is right about good directory links not being removed even though they haven't been renewed. While I haven't seen this with Yahoo I have seen it with some industry specific directories, such as in real estate.

I have had great success submitting to directories. It would be the last thing that I would focus on. If you set it up right, you can really knock them out quick. A good list and roboform should help.

For example, I had a site that was buried and about a month after submitting to about 1500 dirs, it rose to the top twenty. I would only do about a hour a day of this and I was done within a week.

A directory submission is worth it, if you are submiting your site to a quality directory.

Yahoo and DMOZ are the best. Yahoo is expensive and most sites submitted to DMOZ will not get listed for a bunch of reasons.

IMO, mass submission to a bunch of low quality directories is a waste of time.

There are many high quality, low cost paid directories out there.

DMOZ and Yahoo are the best - but I still didn't get them. And I still rank high without using directories.

It is worthless doing submissions to different search engine directories. The major used directories are Google, Yahoo, Bing and Dmoz the open directory.

Dmoz and Yahoo only. If you're gonna submit elsewhere then get DirectoryBot to do mass submission.

Yes Almost worthless except DMOZ, Yahoo, and Few two three More., But You have to Submit your website on those directories which accepting your submission quickly, means there are thousand of directories which never Except our submission.. they remain our website listing in Pending.. SO If you are submitting on Fast Approval Directories then a great chance of indexing in google those links, and try First Search competitor's Backlinks and extract directories from there..
