Hostgator vs Bluehost

Hey guys,

Currently using bluehost, and considering the switch to host gator as I've heard so many great things about it.

Just wondering what your guys thoughts are.... I've had no issues with Bluehost, and the pricing is pretty much the same. But is Host Gator good enough to warrant a switch?

Any input from those who have used either would be great!

Cheers,
CcK

  • I have both, and they are nearly identical honestly. Think I like the most about hostgator is having a reseller account which comes in handy if you have multiple sites that you eventually sell.

Other than that, don't switch unless you just want too. You're not gaining one thing from the next, and like you said the pricing itself is very close to the same as well.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks

    • I use both as well and agree 100%. Nearly identical, except if you want the reseller account then hostgator.
    • Buddy honestly the hostgator is more workable and fruitful if you want re-seller account.
  • been using host gator for quite sometime now..very okay..stable..good customer support. but havent use of bluehost thou.

    • I agree about hostgator support. They are thorough and chat is quick. I haven't had a problem with hostgator.
  • Yes, definitely. There will be no harm other than benefits if you made the switch. Their service is exceptional.

  • Based up on my experience, I have to say HostGator is the deal. I have 9 shared hosting accounts with different companies for my sites and so far HostGator has given me almost 100% uptime and one minor issue that was fixed almost immediately in the 3+ years I have been with them.
  • If you have no issues with bluehost then why change?

I have used both and there isnt much difference

  • Hey guys... thanks for all the input! I just keep hearing host gator's name, with little mention of bluehost... so I thought I may be missing something!

Another quick question... I usually buy my domain's from bluehost (just for convenience), and with the added privacy it costs about $15/domain. Any suggestions for cheaper domain purchases, and if I purchase elsewhere, can it be easily (and quickly) be transferred to Bluehost.

    Thanks again!

    • Always buy your domain names and hosting from different companies. I use namecheap. com ($9.69 + free privacy) and all you have to do is change the dns settings in your domain cpanel. It is very simple. Good luck

    • Most of my domains are with GoDaddy. I've been very happy with them.

    • I buy register my domain names with NameCheap as they have privacy protection free in the first year. It's so easy to point to DNS of Hostgator.

Yeap, I am using Hostgator and can't compare with Bluehost. With Hostgator, my sites are indexed within 2-3 days.

I love to find out if loading page speed on Bluehost is faster. Who knows?

      Thanks!

  • Both are AWESOME..you won't go wrong with either one.
  • To be honest, you really can't go wrong with HG. Their support & uptime are fairly decent for a large 'overseller'.
  • Forget them both and go with SEO Host, which Hostgator owns by the way.
  • I use HostGator (since Fall 2007) and have been satisfied so far. If you're not having any issues with your current host though, you may just want to "leave well enough alone", as the saying goes.

I always get my domain names and hosting from separate companies. That way, if you want to change hosts you're not at the mercy of your current host. YOU control your domain name.
  • I am very biased towards Site5. I've been using Site5 exclusively for around ten years and couldn't be happier. My friend had BlueHost and was miserable with lots of downtime but he switched to Site5 and was happy, too.

That's just my experience... Take it with a grain of salt and do plenty of research! =)
  • I use IGXHost to host my site. I highly recommend them. Theyre on it in an instant if you got anything bad popping up. And I got a monster site and yet they are so patient!!!
  • I will badmouth Bluehost for the rest of my online career. I used bluehost for about 5 months and had a bad experience. I'm not the only one. Bluehostsucks.com.

Every week, and I'm not exaggerating, every week, my site was down for hours at a time. The last straw was like a 48 hour downtime.

On top of that, I occasionally had really long load times. I'm talking like 12 to 15 seconds. I called tech support to ask them why my site was taking so long to load and they told me it was related to my database. I didn't believe them because my hosting was running 5 adsense sites with a total of 20 posts on them and minimal plugins. The tech support guy then proceeded to talk down to me when I asked for his supervisor and told me that I didn't know what I was talking about and a bunch of other disrespectful things.

So then I talked to a different tech support guy who told me someone on my shared hosting account was sucking up all the bandwidth.

Moral of my story. Don't use bluehost ever!

I've been using Hostgator since I started online and I've never had a single problem. On top of that, their tech support are freaking awesome. They will help you with any kind of problem ever and do it in a respectful manner.

    DONT USE BLUEHOST

    • Thank God I choose Hostgator. Before I made my decision. I think hostgator had a better payment plan for monthly billing instead of 1 or 2 year contacts that I think Bluehost had at the time.

Plus it had more features. Which is always a good thing.

Its not as editable with the php.ini file as other hosts. But the customer support, reseller accounts, uptime vs downtime, and such are awesome.

      • [1] reply

    • I have both and would have to give Hostgator the edge for responsive tech support.
    • Having a very similar experience right now...

They told me that is a problem with my ISP when I went and showed them that I have the same issue from my office, home and VPS connection all in different locations! ha...so done with bluehost.
    • I have to support to what you have said, don't USE BLUE HOST. Here is what happened to me:

They claim you can have any number of databases. So I created multiple sites using Drupal and each occupied around 200 tables per site. I eventually exceed 1000 tables in total and my major site got SHUT OFF! I mean without any warning email or notification, my site which serves my customers got terminated and I figured it out from my customer and that's BAD. I mean HTF I know exceed this magic number? They said I causes performance problem on the shared server which I don't think that number of tables will cause that since my others sites are pretty idle. Second they claim my plan can have infinite files. I don't know I have exceed that limit (I think 10k or so?). This time they show it on the CPanel with the number in red, however I don't login to my CPanel that frequently and I exceed that magic limit and my hosting service got terminated again without notice!! So WTH I don't get any notification before they decided to terminate my service at any time they want and they like??? Also I experience the load time sometimes take much longer (like 15 seconds without response, used to like 4 seconds) Especially around pacific time 12pm, I think that may related to scheduled backups, who knows? Well that's what I have experienced in the past and if I can find one better I will definitely move.

    • [1] reply
    • I have used bluehost for over two yaers and never had any issues. I run around 25 websites with databases on the one shared hosting account. They do have what they call CPU throttling which means each account on the shared hosting will have it's CPU time "cut-off" momentarily/intermittantly when account has excesive CPU activity. On the plus side it means aothers accounts on your shared hosting should not be able to bring your sites down. Ther only downside is if you have some heavy duty scripts like autoblogs running as this will certainly "throttle".
The other issue is that they do not offer any reseller hosting so you need to go to hostgator for that.

I have had a reseller account with hostgator for a few months now and it's great. Set up all your sites on reseller accounts if you want to sell them then you can offer hosting in the deal. I use it to give hosting space to my students. It's obviously a more money than hostgator baby which seems to be the popular account to have.

I have tried a few "cheap" reseller hostings and even with a lot of upfront due dilligence I have lost 3 accounts (companies folded or bailed). The grief was just too much so never again.
  • Hands down to hostgator
    • [1] reply
  • Hostgator is better , but if you have no problem then carry on your old hosting .
  • I have accounts on both. As others have said, they are nearly carbon copies of each other with a few exceptions.

For whatever reason, I find myself gravitating more to HG than BH and recommend all my offline clients there as well. Nothing against BH, its just a feeling I have that gives HG the edge that makes me more comfortable recommending it.

Since you already have BlueHost, my recommendation would be to keep your existing stuff there and give HG a shot for your new projects.
  • I have been with HostGator for several years... my only suggestion is Do Not use the online chat... they are slow and rude. If they are working with you they may be working with several other persons. I have learned to call in to the 866# and have Great Success then and very quick to resolve all my issues. BlueHost I am not sure of I switched to a reseller account and didn't get to use the customer service at BH.
    • [1] reply
    • Wow. I have to say that my experience with HG chat has been entirely different from yours. I have no doubt that what you say is true for you, but I've been with them several years and use chat support quite often and I have nothing but praise for it.

I have found that every time I've hit the chat app, a technician has been able to resolve my issue within 10-15 minutes. And they've always been professional and courteous. I've never felt like I was just one of many receiving help, although I'm sure I am.

This is the one feature that I routinely brag on hostgator for and I've never left a chat without giving a 10 out of 10 rating.

  • I like hostgator; they have a tendency to think out of the box a bit & are continually trying to innovate with one-of-a-kind features & more persona than other hosts. However I have heard usually lovely reviews about all six that you mention.

    • Hosting solutions vie for profitability position by giving their clients the best and unique service that they can give them. Hosting solutions like Bluehost and Hostgator sell their services by promising their customers with reliable 24/7 support.

Based on experience, Hostgator has been very good with regards to their customer service and about being cheaper you can simply use a coupon code to save you 25% on your Hostgator web hosting. It simply works.

Ive been with Hostgator for some time now, and I cant compare it to bluehost but from what I see, tons of affiliate marketers are heavily promoting Hostgator.

When I started IM, the webhosting name I came across very often was Hostgator as compared to bluehost.

  • didn't use bluehost before, but hostgator, hostgator is good and I can suggest to anyone
  • If the only reason you want to move to HG is because you hear everyone saying it's good, that's pointless. If your happy with your current host, then there isn't really much point in changing hosts, you won't be saving any money, just wasting time and causing headaches
  • Have never used bluehost, but I would completely recommended Hostgator. never a problem and great customer service!

    • I agree with you 100%. Their customer service the the number one reason, I guess, why most people prefer hostgator.
    • This is a hard choice. Partly because I have used both companies and enjoyed them both thoroughly. There are a few key differences I have noticed when using them.

HostGator: Little bit better server performance and speed. QuickInstall is a great one click installer.

Bluehost: Few bucks cheaper. I have never had a problem they couldn't solve. Features are good.

      Hope that helps!

  • I use Go Daddy for domains and hostgator for Hosting... It's a good combination, however, you can get cheap domains easily by search, and then it's a simple matter of pointing nameservers to your hosting account...
  • they're the same
  • Another +1 for namecheap.com for domains.

Hosting - if it ain't broke don't fix it.
  • I am using HostGator for an year now. I feel it is really good value for money spent.
I recieved excellent support from them on few installation problems.
  • I am using Bluehost and it is great. I think they just had (admittedly) problems several years ago, that is why there were so many negative comments on Bluehost. But now, i think their system has improved already.. and i am very satisfied.
  • They are both fairly similar. Some people just have good luck with one host. Other times you just happen to be put on a server that is either overloaded or a few sites are hogging the resources. If you do not have any issues or complaints about your current host then there really is no need to switch just for the heck of it. You might regret it and end up switching back. If at some point you do have issues, complaints, or problems then I would think about switching. If you are happy and content keep what you got for now. Depending on what kind of site or sites you have it can also be a real pain moving everything over, and updating to reflect the new host.
  • i am also using the server of bluehost
  • I'll have to go with HostGator.
  • I find blue host to be better
  • I currently use hostgator. I like the fact that you can enable gzip compression to speed up your site.
  • I've been with HostGator for 5 years now - currently on a VPS to take advantage of cheap dedicated IPs - deff worth sticking with
  • Both are good
I'm with hostgator, very stable and with great support
  • If it is between BlueHost and HostGator, you can't make a bad choice. Both companies are well known and reputable companies that offer pretty much the same service for similar prices. Their customer service is consistent, effective, and easily available.
  • They are both brand names in the web hosting world, but it is not that they should choose. You need to know what you need, if they will be able to provide you with those
    • [1] reply
    • I use Hostgator. It gives me everything that I need and more.

Only gripe I've had with them lately is the loading of my sites. My wordpress sites are not overloaded with plugins... I keep them pretty clean. Worries me because I wonder if it's affecting my bounce rate or not!

I did a search and saw that some others were having similar issues. BUT... I also saw that others were having similar issues with OTHER hosting companies as well.
  • Actually been dealing with bluehost recently and would not recommend them.

    • My sites was hacked and I contacted bluehost and they tell me to sort it out on my own..., as though i knew what to look out for. So if you're thinking of getting bluehost as your host, think again.
  • None of the above. :p

If I had to pick, I would definitely go with HostDime.

They have solid hosting services & top-notch support.
  • Neither, they are both oversize overpriced companies
  • Given that you are caught in between Bluehost and HostGator, it is needless recommending any other host but give a greater preference to HostGator.
  • i preferably choose host gator
    • [1] reply
    • NO BLUEHOST!

I have been with them since 2006 & recently they have been nothing but problems! I found this post while searching for a new hosting company and couldn't resist putting in my two cents.

      1. I had too many files on the server and had to delete some or my account would be deleted in 14 days. (not allowed over 50,000 files which includes individual email files)

      2. I had too many SQL Databases & they SHUT DOWN MY SITE WITHOUT EVEN CONTACTING ME! (I don't remember how many I had, but it was less than 50). They claimed that I had "too many tables".

I only host 5 websites one of which is an online store and the others are just very basic Joomla sites. Two of which I don't even use.

I'm leaving Bluehost as soon as I find a new hosting company & if Hostgator is the same company... NOT going there either!

If Bluehost is going to treat a customer of FIVE YEARS without ANY I mean NO problems prior to a couple of months ago the way that I have been treated... I can only imagine how they are going to treat others!

I'm open to suggestions on other hosting companies... Thanks...
      • [ 1 ] Thanks

  • These hosting companies seem to have a good wrap over all, but to be honest, I am rather surprised that they offer so much so cheap. Like unlimited domains, hosting space and file transfers. I am looking for a host for a site with target accidence in Australia, do these host have servers in Aust or near? Well, that makes me look like I know what I am talking about, opps , I mean, are they fast in Australia? I am thinking of including hosting with my next website, have it on one of these Unlimited domains and charge monthly hosting and consolidate my other sites here to.

    Thanks
  • Both are great. I am using both of them for more than 3 years!
  • Is HostGator in particular and Bluehost fast for Australian uses?
  • Hey, I use: Host the Name | Host Unlimited Websites with Unlimited Bandwidth & Space! | Host the Name as my hosting provider. It has ALL of the same features of both Bluehost & Hostgator, at a fraction of the cost.
  • Hostgator does have a stellar reputation, that said Bluehost isn't far behind
  • my vote is for bluehost
  • I switched from Bluehost to HostGator about a month ago because I needed VPS. Bluehost doesn't have VPS and HG does.

HG transferred all my sites for me. It was relatively painless. I pay a lot more each month, but I was being throttled by Bluehost and needed to switch. Glad I did. HG is good.
  • If your sites have little traffic then they are ok. They seem to be stable. their customer support seems to be good. but as soon you install labour intensive wordpress sites with average amount of plug-ins and lots of traffic then they will shut you down. I ve experienced it time and time again. The way they advertise their packages eg. 'unlimited bandwidth' is completely wrong.
    Be warned
    • [1] reply
    • The only issue I have had with HG is occasional slowness on their shared servers. In nearly every instance it was someone abusing resources. If you get the right person on their live chat support, they will get a problem resolved rather quickly. If you get someone not as knowledgeable, they tend to give you canned responses. I've actually gotten better support through their forum. The HG techs that hang out in there seem to do a better job at helping you. You sometimes need to push them, but for the most part they do get on it and will recommend moving to a different shared server. I had to do this once and since the move it's been great.
  • I've never had any problems with Hostgator.

  • HostGator bring fast and dependable hosting with expert, trained and friendly help support all the time. Hostgator can also be paid monthly called Hostgator baby is you do not want to pay yearly like in Bluehost.
  • I really like JustHost and HostGator - I have not Tried Blue Host though. The problem with JustHost is (in the UK at least) they charge a £10 set up fee!
  • I use Dreamhost, which seems to be quite similar to Bluehost. No problems so far.

Shouldn't IMs be looking more carefully to SEOHost.com? You know, Class C IPs and all?
    • [1] reply
    • O.K., just to clear up the record, Bluehost (owned by Matt Heaton) owns HostMonster.

      Bluehost Does NOT Own Hostgator.

I had Hostmonster/BlueHost for 5 years, and just switched to Servint VPS after Hostmonster disabled my account without warning, because I was using supposedly using too much of the CPU resources. Of course, tech support had no idea of what the problem was or how to fix it, they just told me I needed to find the problem or hire someone to do it for me.

Bluehost and Hostmonster will throttle any shared accounts that they feel are using too much of the CPU, so if you have a lot of traffic you're going to probably run into problems.

I've never used HostGator, but by from what I've heard, it is very solid and reliable, and gets high marks from many people.

On the other hand, I certainly can no longer recommend Bluehost or its sister HostMonster anymore. If you do use BlueHost/HostMonster however, be warned that they might disable or throttle your account if they deem you are using too much CPU, or if you have too many files (50,000+).
  • I have both. They are basically identical. I tend to favor HostGator by a slight margin, not sure why, just a feel.

It can be a good practice to diversify your hosting footprint once you reach a large number of sites on one server, if only for the sake of limiting your exposure to server failure.
  • i think hostgator is a little bit overpriced
  • i used to use ixwebhosting they are the worse, sites are slow everyday, tech support is bad, so i made the switch to HG and now all my sites are fast loading, and service is great!

I haven't had any huge problems with Bluehost...so no rant coming. I just have had zero problems with HostGator and have had several minor Bluehost issue over the past year or two.

My second vote goes to Arvixe...where I will probably add all of my new sites to (maybe even over HostGator). Never had any issues with them, but I only have five sites with them.
  • Back in 2005 I chose to do my work using Hostdepartment reseller plan with Hsphere control panel and I kept it till 2010 when I was running Hostgator reseller plan (USA), Webbase reseller plan (New Zealand data center) and Locaweb (Brazilian data center) all together. I had opportunity to manage them from different locations: Los Angeles, Auckland (NZ) and Sao Paulo (BR). Hostgator was the winner to manage and access its control panel, page loading time and overall performance in all the locations. As result after a period of time I decided to go Seohosting (Hostgator) with a set o different IPs.
  • Hostgator is very effecient to use for me. I've been setting up websites using this hosting and encountered no problem with it.
  • what do you think about Arvixe hosting?

I've using Hostgator for approximately 6 years and I am very happy with it and I don't think I'll switch to another hosting company because it serves all the purposes needed to run my sites, and I do not have any complaints of their services.
If you are not happy with you current hosting company Hostgator is a very good alternative.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Have been building sites for almost 3 months and I used hostgator for all those sites. It works well for me.
  • I have had my hostgator account (shared) for a while (over a year) and had a couple of issues that got resolved quickly and efficiently with support. However, I am not too pleased with the performance. Living in Switzerland the ping return trip is some 200 plus milliseconds, which is normal for overseas traffic, however I get really slow build up of websites. If I compare same sites built on coolhandle, hostgator sites are really much much slower.
  • Everyone seems to be saying it's pretty much the same regardless of which one you are at. The true test of a provider is often how they handle things when there are problems. I can't speak to Blue Host but I can share my experience with Host Gator. I've been with HostGator for quite some time but almost left recently due to some server instability issues. What kept me at Host Gator in spite of the problem was the technical support they provide. This is the one thing that really makes Host Gator stand out. It all eventually worked out when Host Gator moved me to a different server so all's well that ends well but Host Gator's support reps are amazing and are really what has kept me with Host Gator. If you get the same from Blue Host, there would be no reason to switch but if you are unhappy with the tech support you receive, Host Gator might be the place for you.
  • HostGator is cheap and really customer friendly. Any time I have a problem I can either live chat with them (and they're really great at solving my problems fast) or calling them (which does take longer) but HostGator is really great at customer service. I have used them for years with no problems.
  • My vote goes to Bluehost, but I agree with alot of responses on here that Bluehost and Host Gator are nearly identical.

    • I don't have any experience with BlueHost, but I did cancel my HostGator account long ago because they messed up their script between their billing and Paypal's. It resulted in my domains being down, because they redirected my site to their default pages. I was paying for traffic at the time, and so I was very unimpressed, to say the least. They refused any reasonable compensation, so I cancelled my hosting with them.

  • If it's Pretty much the same.for me, i think you should change,y?for curiosity sake, Having the feel and way around with other hosting. It's a gain both for your knowledge and experience in different kinds of hosting.
  • Host gator is best
  • we've been at Dreamhost for a while and it's definitely better than Bluehost. although nowadays we've moved away from those shared hosts entirely - having a dedicated Xeon server at e.g. server4you.net is much better in terms of stability and speed.
  • They had been with Hostgator for some time now, as well as they can't equate it to Bluehost simply from what it see, tons of affiliate marketers are heavily promoting Hostgator.
  • I am wondering if at Hostagtor if I need to update WordPress installations one at a time if I don't use something like Fantastico which is apparently susceptible to hackers. On Bluehost, you can click one button and ALL your websites get updated at once. If you have many websites, this is a time saver.

Please comment if you know thanks?
  • I've been with HostGator for 6+ years. They USE to be top notch, but the past 6 months or so they have become down right HORRIBLE. I am shopping for a new hosting provider as I type this. They forced me to upgrade my package to a $89 VPS server from the reseller because their servers can't handle 4,000 daily visits. Since upgrading to the outrageously expensive VPS server, the downtime has been overwhelming. I made a ticket and they asked me to monitor something or another and get back to them. What?!?!?!??!! I pay them $90 a month so I can try and troubleshoot their servers problem??? Do they want me to clean their office and answer phones too? Why not put me on a new server???

    HostGator is AWFUL!

I requested to go back to the reseller account I had and they want to charge me a fee to move my sites. WTF!!!

DO NOT GO TO HOSTGATOR IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT YOUR WEBSITE BUSINESS!!!

    • Arrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!! I've been there!!!!!!!! Check out the reviews on the webhost in my signature.

They are a small company in Indiana. The owner Michael is incredibly nice & on top of his game. I personally don't think the guy sleeps. + His team has the same positive "get it done" attitude. I personally would hesitate to recommend anyone else to clients.

I completely agree with you... if you are serious about your business... you need reliability.

I'm hoping they are what you are looking for
  • I worked with hostgator in the past and I am back again at them...love them
  • I personally have used Host Gator and had a great experience. I also like their rates.
  • Can someone answer my question from post #155 if you know.

    repeated here:

    Awesome, thanks.

    • I have no idea - but I imagine a 1 click update could be a nightmare when it comes to a template being Wordpress latest release ready.

What is your backup plan on all these installations? Please tell me you are backing them all up first then doing your update. Nothing like a wonky theme template or plugin to make your site crash.

Not to mention for us... we modify every template we are asked to use. I prefer to build from scratch, but often clients have their heart set on a template they found. 1 click updating could cause a ton of issues.

Or if you actually do site hardening or spam control... 1 click updating... I hope you documented all your changes that you are gonna have to redo.

My 2 cents... often I am only completely right on in my mind ...

ps. Not an attack on you! Just thought provokers for everyone reading this that may not have your level of Wordpress knowledge.
  • As an experienced webmaster I recommend BlueHost service which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them
  • Wow - 120 posts & counting... people luv or hate them!

My 2 cents - I love my indy web host ($8 a month). I found them through awesome customer reviews on their service. I've been using them for a few years & have yet to want to scream during problem resolution. They respond within minutes (24-7), All American, & most importantly they are always spending the extra $ on server upgrades for faster speed. They also have a tight TOS... which as a SEO expert I appreciate... Google does judge you on speed & the cr@p residing on your shared server.

I personally would not recommend either for business websites. Businesses do NOT have time for down websites or email issues. & if you are going to spend the money for DNS redundancy... don't go cheap on hosting - you get what you pay for. My fav is low cost for all hosting tiers, but very professional in service.

    JMHO
  • This is my second 3/yr $3.95/mo stint with Bluehost. Before that I was paying around $6.95 but that was over 7 years ago. I have also used HostGator, however, never for unlimited.
    ...
First off I don't like being lied to, and HG starts right of the bat when you try to sign up for an account saying that SPRING is their best coupon code (saves you 20%). This IS NOT their best coupon code, so why do they say that it is? [try HOSTGATOR371 => and save 25%].
    ...
Which brings up another point. In order to match BH's account that is available for $3.95 per month and match features you need to purchase HG's 'Baby' account [such wonderful names, make you feel small so you'll buy big] -- Don't believe me, LOL, do some math on reseller account -- past GOLD you are losing HD/BW per $.
    ...
If you do purchase the 'Baby' account so you can use more than 1 domain name then the least you will pay monthly [again buy 3 years for the savings] is $5.96 per month.
    ...
Now I don't know about you, but if I can get the same thing.... and truthfully guys, I am NOT convinced that BlueHost is HostGator, however, I do know that BlueHost is HostMonster 100%...
    ...
if you can get the SAME features for 3 x 12 x $2.01 = $72.36 less, or (BH-HG)/HG = -33.725% cheaper, then tell me why you would want to pay over 50% mo to have HG instead of BH... (HG-BH)/BH = a 50.886% increase in costs.
    ...
HG does have a selection of 4,500 templates to choose from. For an up-to-date comparison do it yourself online if you are in the market. If you're not in the market, then why are you reading this?
    ...
I have had no problems with downtime with either. I use BH for unlimited hosting. I use HG for reseller. I also have a 2TB Unmetered Server and like running compiled code, or as a last resort I byte-compile PHP using IonCube.
    ...
What I don't like, but hardly use is BlueHosts support. It's not their support, but the nagging prior to getting someone on the line while I am waiting. I really, really like CHAT. I can go about my business while I am waiting for someone to come on the line without having to listen to noise and adverts.
    ...
But then again, with chat I have to stay at the computer, but I can carry the phone with me (make coffee and various other sundry things
    ...
You can find BH via Google "BlueHost 3.95" no quotes or sign up for HG using this ***Special Secret Code*** HOSTGATOR371, that even HG doesn't know about instead of SPRING (or else they wouldn't be telling the truth, now would they?)
    ...
Have a great day, and if you want to talk about customized software, affiliate membership software, etc. then shoot me a PM.
  • Can anyone familure with HostGator tel me where WordPress is on Cpanel?
Under Software/Services it is not there like in BlueHost.

I see Fantastico but don't want to use it due to easy for hackers.
    • [1] reply

    • I Ducksauce,
You can not find Wordpress in HG cpanel. Only find it via fantastico, or his new script istallation manager named : "Quick Install" under Software/Services group in cpanel.
      ...

      My opinion:

I use HG since i began on IM. I had no problem with the services, but when I had some issues, the support service attend to me very well with great skills and very pleasant.
  • Hostgator is one of the best companies that offer web hosting services, with thousands of clients as well as many positive results. The web hosting services include shared, dedicated or reseller hosting.
  • I find Hostgator are pretty reliable, and the live chat support is always great in setting things up, sucks that most servers are located in the US though.
  • Bluehost was among those studied in the analysis of web-based hosting services in cooperative online learning programs. BlueHost is one of the 20 largest web hosts, together with hosting well over lots domains with its own companies.
  • I vote for Host Gator, their customer service is great.
  • I have used Hostgator, absolutely no problem with them so far
  • Hostgator here as well with over 40 sites Baby plan. No probs.
  • Hostgator. Have used it ever since and encountered no problem with their service so far.
  • I've been using Bluehost for 3 years, have done a great service and customer support, but sometimes I can find bad staff live chat, like, like they did not want to help the long-term customers. And these last few weeks, I've been experiencing CPU load that make my sites below.
  • They are nearly identical honestly. They believe that it like the most about hostgator is having a reseller account which comes in handy if they have multiple sites that they eventually sell.

  • I think they are both good, no harm trying Hostgator if you've had problems with Bluehost
  • Yep, I'll add myself to the bluehost hater party!

If you're looking for a host, DO NOT SIGN UP WITH BLUEHOST!

One of my sites went from 3 seconds loading time, to 8, 12, 15 and even 20 seconds.

I haven't added content to the site since November, and haven't done any plugin additions to it. Yet the site has been throttled a few times.

Of course, bluehost gives you the same lame excuse that it might be a plugin or content on the site, etc. Then i ask them, but you can see from my stats that for months the site has been averaging 3-4 second load pages and suddenly it goes up? Then they say, it could be a plugin, content, etc.

I'll be moving the site in a couple of weeks hopefully to hostgator. Funny thing is, when I first signed up for a webhost, i signed up for hostgator. However, they said that i got flagged for credit card fraud, so they had to manually approve my account, and at the time I was out of the country for work, so after 4 days of trying to email them stuff, I just said, screw it, I'll go to bluehost. Bad bad decision.
  • Host Gator for Hosting.
    Name Cheap for Domains.
  • I go with the previous post. Im using hostgator and so far have had no problems.
  • [DELETED]
  • Definitely a big supporter of Hostgator. Been with them for 5 years now and rarely have had any issues. Anything that has sprung up in the past has been taken care of in literally minutes. Uptime has been awesome, sites load fast and customer service has always been great. Never had a reason to look anywhere else for hosting.
  • HG Baby or Biz acct, or Reseller for hosting and NameCheap for domain purchases.

HG runs a 1 cent first month deal often - can save you a bit - don't have code handy but you can google for it, or get 25% off your subscription - just use coupon code 25OFFER111
    • [1] reply
    • Thanks for the coupon. I just used it for a reseller account.
  • I love hastgator never had a problem but iam sure its all pretty much the same
  • hostgator is better than blue host...but i like godaddy hosting lol....

  • They're both good.
  • Hostgator for its ridiculously great customer service.

I was using another provider which blocked my account for high volume of traffic. When I tell them "what about my unlimited bandwidth?", they then told me my website is sucking a lot of resources on the server. When I asked for some statistics, they never come up with them and unblocked the site eventually. I decided to make the move and e-mailed some providers about their services, including HG.

While the others replied my e-mail in 2 days to 1 week, HG contacted me from my phone number which was in my mail signature, in the next few hours. A billing representative answered all my questions, including technical ones.

Now I work with HG for 4 years and rarelly had any problems. And when I have one, they solved it no more than half a day. By the way, the website which caused me to leave my old provider, is now much larger and driving more traffic; HG never complained about any server or bandwidth issues

Just another option you may look into may be iPage (check signature). I am also working with them for about 2 years for a different project. Hosting 9 websites with all of them database driven and very busy sites with lots of members, I did not have much problem at all. Once, they mailed me to check one of my sites as it was causing abnormal load on the server and may be hacked, the next day they returned to me with the exact line of codes and database queries which were suspicious and I was able to solve the problem without any code inspection on my side.

  • I seldom in this WF..but thanks to this thread that I now can finalize my decision.
I think that everyone has their own experience with this hosting providers. So, I decided to give it a try first before give any comments regarding their services.

    • I went ahead and got a Baby hosting plan at Hostgator based on recommendations in this forum and I couldn't be happier. The same sites that took forever to load from Bluehost load nice and quick on Hostgator, and it is so nice to work on my sites and not have to wait for them to be 'unthrottled' from Bluehost. I do prefer Bluehost's cPanel, but I can overlook having to use Fantastico it if it means better site performance.

  • I have been with HostGator for some years now, having a reseller account and never had any problems..
  • I am using Hostgator and i'm quite satisfied

  • Hello! If you really wanna try hostgator, it's all right mainly cause it's really similar to bluehost in terms of services. They're both really great and really useful. Had both and they both work well. Hope that helped you in a way or so. Best of luck on this though.

  • now i'm with hostgator and i found their services pretty good . i use the shared baby plane .
  • One aspect of BlueHost was when I was setting up a WordPress database with them it was much more difficult than with Hostgator.
  • What would the benefit of switching be for you?
  • Hostgator is awesome. If i have the slightest of problems with anything I just hop on their 24/7 chat box and BOOM problem resolved.

On the other hand, i've heard folks here and there say this and that about bad customer service. I dont know what they are talking about. Again, hostgator is awesome.
  • doesnt matter

im with both. Never had serious problems with them. They are both pretty cheap. Just keep in mind that shared hosting will always have limits. It will never be "unlimited" like they say
  • I prefer Bluehost as you also get a free domain with your subscription. You can read more at Bluehost vs Hostgator
  • HostGator is great. I am not very good with websites and I ALWAYS somehow forget my password. Their support is great, and I have about 4 sites on there and I've never had a problem. HostGator prices are great, BUT i've heard that for students, BlueHost has discounts on domains.
  • HostGator is the best. 99,99% uptime, what else do you need?
    • [1] reply
    • So is every other web host out there. do you understand what "99.9%" means?

  • If you are looking for a reseller account, then only go for Hostgator.

    • I have never had even one problem with Hostgator... pretty awesome record I would say as I have about 150 sites there!
      • [1] reply
  • Both are good to host websites.
  • Going to have to say Bluehost, easy to install and update wordpress websites, winner!
  • I have both but have used bluehost for my last 10 sites. It worked great until a few months ago. Now it is slooowwww. Not happy at all and will be moving all my sites to my hostgator account and cancelling bluehost. At least they have a anytime money back guarantee.

  • Both Bluehost and Hostgator belong to the group of largest global hosting providers, boasting multi-mullion client bases and lucrative pricing made possible by the huge scale of their businesses. The differences are less obvious, yet there are some that may shift your choice in favor of one or the other. Read more on w101 Webmaster University: Hostgator vs Bluehost: a Hosting Provider Comparison.
  • I've used both. Started with Bluehost... for a while they had great customer service, then I had a bad experience with one of their online tech people directing me to a long, complex help guide for an issue I was having. (If I had been able to figure it out on my own I wouldn't have waited an hour to actually chat with someone.) It was just dismissive and rude. Their efforts to get me to renew were sloppy as well, so I dropped them and switched to Hostgator.

Every time I've called in I've received prompt support and HG stayed on the phone as they completed some tough (for me) technical processes. They've got my vote.
