Not sure why my keyword domain name isn't ranking

Hi, I have howtogetclearskin.org and when I do a search for how to get clear skin, it's not ranked in the first six pages. Searching in quotes gives me 1 result in the first 100 pages for one of my articles.

Can someone explain what I did/I'm doing wrong here? I'm contemplating just scrapping it and focusing completely on my first acne site. Which incidentally is doing better than this one for the same kw phrase

  • You need to do proper on page SEO, and backlinking.

One of these is probably a weak spot, maybe both.

    • I'd say that you've got to do more off site SEO work.
  • How long have you been backlinking
  • While buying a keyword rich domain is important, that is not the entire game. You must get inbound links relating to that keyword phrase in order for Google to consider ranking you well for it.

Just always keep this in mind: If SEO was easy, everyone would be doing it... and then it wouldn't be easy anymore . In other words, don't get discouraged. Remember that the harder you work for it, the harder it will be for someone else to take it from you.

BTW, I have free articles regarding on-site SEO and off-site SEO. Not promoting anything... this stuff is what I used to build my seven figure niche business, and (for what it's worth) I'm not selling anything IM related.

    • Your keyword phrase is too competitive.

Do some bookmarking and you should improve your rank.

      Your onsite SEO is good.

  • Backlinking? What's that?

haha no it's only been a month but I guess I had some high expectations because I've been having moderate success with my other site that I've had for about a year. I guess I expected to dominate in no time flat.

  • If you don't tell us what you are doing, we can't tell what is right and what is wrong.

All we know is that you have a domain name. That by itself will not result in high rankings.
  • It sounds like you are trying to get listed simply by your domain name, which probably won't get you very far by itself.

I had a discussion a few years back on another forum, and I wish I could find it so I could put up a link to it. The general consensus there seemed to be that a "run together" name like 'howtogetclearskin.org' would not rank as well as a site named 'how-to-get-clear-skin.org' In your situation, I would think the spider would see that as one word, whereas in the second example it would pick out each individual word.

    • Hi...

I'll have to respectfully disagree with this comment. If you ask 10 SEO experts if given the choice between available domain names with and without dashes, I'm confident that 9 out of 10 would recoomed getting the domain names without dashes.

      P.S. I am not a SEO expert.
  • Hey....

I do keyword research ALL DAY LONG so I took a look at your targeted keyword phrase. Here are some things I notice:

    1. According to my keyword research tool, it's getting searched for about 178 times each day. Not bad.

    2. You're SEO competition is 279,000 competing pages (searched for on Google inside of quotes). That's definitely not insurmountable, but I wouldn't call it "lower amounts of competition".

    3. Your Intitle competition is 1,120. (The "intitle comp" stat is the number of times tha the keyword phrase was used in the title field of a web page). Having a Intitle comp of just 1,120 (along with the 279,000 SEO comp) tells me that although this keyword phrase is commonly used in this niche, not many webmasters are targeting it directly. If they were, the "intitle comp" number would be much higher. So this is a great sign.

Now, this is just part of the story. You are wanting to rank in the top twn on Google's search engine results, right? So we need to see what that competition is like.

Here's what I found in terms of the top 10 Google results for "how to get clear skin" keyword phrase:

Now things get really interesting. One thing that I notice right away (that I would consider a good sign for you) is the amount of article directories showing on the first page. Articles rarely have many backlinks, so if a few of them are showing in the top 10, that's a positive indication.

Check out the number of Page Backlinks there are? Sure, there are a few higher ones, but most are quite manageable (in terms of beating).

Another thing to look at are the number of times that the top 10 pages used the keyword phrase in the domain, header, etc.

If you are looking to get your site ranked in the top 10 results, you see what your true cmpetition is. By adding your keyword phrase in the ideal places (in terms of SEO) and building quality backlinks, you should have little difficult in ranking in the first page of Google's results.

    Hope this analysys helps.

  • You say you run a "search" -- In which search engine?????

If its Google, learn to use the webmaster tools. Everything you need is in there. Google will TELL you what needs fixing.
  • lol...so i simply need to get a "carinsurancequotes.org" for $7.77/year and two days later i have #1 in google for "car insurance quotes"...

--> IF AT ALL, it has minimal impact on SERPs.

One of the big myths what a huge influence KW in domain has, but it HAS NOT unless someone proves me the opposite!

Also..if you have a domain "www .whatever.com" you can achieve the same thing with www .whatever.com/KEYWORD_on_subpage.html

it does not need to be in the domain name itself.
