How I got penalized by Google and recovered.

Hi,

In the last week of November I started with my site on dating, ex back etc. Working many hours google brought me around the 60 visitors a day around the second week of January. I got all happy and saw myself sitting below a palm tree with four beautiful women next to me.

But then I woke up a certain monday morning and put on my computer to see that my site had gone from google. After two weeks of reading, hard work and lots of help I am back again today. I made many mistakes but see it as valuable information for the rest of my career. Also I did some things well, after all I am back where I wanted to be. I write this post mainly as a reminder for myself but if you have good ideas or remarks to make please feel free.

So What happened?

Early January, 6 weeks after going live:
1. My site ranked well, got more and more traffic. On top of that I found a nice affiliate deal.
2. Went on with linkbuilding through blog comments.
3. Added new content almost daily.
Then"
All of a sudden a drop of about 50 in my rankings and for some words my had disappeared completely.
4. Immediately started looking for what might be the cause:

I found out a lot through this post:

10 Ways to Diagnose a Google Penalty | Search Engine Journal

- Made sure that it really was a penalty (followed the steps that are described)
- Learned that there are many possible causes for a penalty.
- That Google Webmaster central is essential in this process.(which I used from the beginning)

Then the big search for causes started, as I have used many blogs and resources I cannot recall where I got the information from. I can only say that there is lots of information out there.

Possible causes I found first:

- My Link profile depends on blog comments.
- Some sites I posted comments on got flooded with spammy comments later.
- Sitemap was different from actual pages. Disclaimer could not be accessed from site but was visible in sitemap, same for 2 other pages.

I solved the sitemap issue and removed links from some dodgy sites.

I went to the Google Webmaster central, and filed for reinclusion, stating I was a nice guy who was so stupid to use blog comments for linkbuilding. And that some of the blogs got hacked by people spamming the blogs.

Nothing happened.

Possible causes found after one week.

- My theme is Prosense and through bad neighborhood link checker http://www.bad-neighborhood.com/text-link-tool.htm I found out, that through the links I forgot to remove in the footer, bad sites like Pharma and Sex sites could be accessed.

- Some 404 pages on my site.

Removed them both nothing happened.

Last week:

- I found out that too many affiliate links are very bad for the SEO of a site. As I had added 2 or more links to Clickbank and other sites on each page. This might have been the main reason of my drop . GREED

-Therefore I removed all the links and send them to two pages, where O have added three links to the affiliate provider. I added a NOFOLLOW tag to these links just as google tells us to do.

After this I filed for reinclusion and now I am up again.

I hated the penalty but learned lots from this situation. I am happy I put on webmaster central at an early stage. I was stupid to file for reinclusion shortly after the penalty, before doing elaborate research. Still I am not entirely sure whether the reinclusion request helped to get my site back on track.

Main cause is in hindsight: Too many Affiliate links...
Also bad neighborhood and link profile could be the cause, I would urge everyone to use the bad neigborhood checker, to find and remove any bad outbound links!

From now on I am going to work with a free download and an autoresponder, not only selling more but also be SEO-friendly.

Thanks for everyone who helped me!

I also found that when adding Clickbank Affiliates links it would change up my rankings drastically.

I had a PR3 page and added one affiliate link which dropped my ranking and stopped traffic for that page.

Good post. I'm sure a lot of others will get help from this.

are you sure your site was completely DEINDEXED or simply sank down in rankings? L

Linkbuilding almost ALWAYS causes a significant google dance (like ranking from page #1 to page #50 can happen)...but still a long shot from completely deindexed. (Deindexed means your site is completely gone from google index). Just wondering.

No I never got completely deindexed. But it was a penalty, not some Google dance. My domain is two keywords combined, first I ranked third of fourth in the SERP for this query.

A search for the domain name with extension did show my site but on the 12th position.

And all of a sudden I dropped to the 60th place or even worse. Many other queries I used to rank with on the first page too disappeared completely or went to a position somewhere in the hundreds...

      But I am back!

i wouldnt be so sure, rather wait what other SEOs have to say here. I see it all the time that sites get pushed WAY back after i leave a number of links.

Your post is interesting, but if you did link building *at the same time* it would be hard to say that your site dropped because of the affiliate links..it could simple be because of the links (google reshuffling its ranking after it found all the links)....and the site would *probably* have re-appeared anyway after a week or so ?

I have one site which is ranking #1 for a KW which sank way back at the moment...i also built some more links...but i didnt do anything on-site. I am pretty sure it will reappear.

this is some interesting reads, but

A member of the Webmaster World forums reported in this thread that:
"A new site that gets like 20 links per day, then all of a sudden gets 2000 in one day, well then there's tom foolery going on there and the penalty gets slapped. Once that penalty is slapped, over time it will go away.
Try to avoid any anomalies. Slowly ramp up your linking strategy."
This sounds like a plausible explanation for such penalties since Google has always stood
they cite some random, unknown person from a forum and make it sound like Mr. SEO is talking, in fact i think the user was just guessing. Who knows, he might not even have a clue about SEO at all.

Thanks, I did not know the Google Dance could be so extreme. I had only 14-16 links in total to my site. Assembled over a period of three weeks.

There were two links from two different blogs that were hacked after I commented on it, I have removed the links to my site. This might have been a big influence, or not?

I still believe that the affiliate links did not help though and the main cause is there. But I am just some guy with limited SEO experience. And google does not explain every move they make.

yes, as said with that one site i have #2 (outranked only by wikipedia) and have this position for months. Over a year at least.

I admit i am getting a little concerned since the site is gone at the moment for several days. A few days go i added a new article and pinged, and the site immediately appeared #2 again...just to disappear again the next day.
Even if i am "concerned" i simply give it more days..it happened frequently also with other sites, and i am talking of pushing WAY back like 50 pages back. Which is of course odd since the site was on top position steady like a rock for months and months.

Think about it: If it really would be the case i simply get me some pauls/angelas for $15 and boot off any competitor??
