Google Maps Submissions

Ok so this is my first stab at using google maps. I'm helping out my friends business and just submitted the first one about an hr ago. So here's the question...

I see the listing already if I search for it specifically, but as far as it ranking on the first page (if it even can) is there a wait involved just like with any other SEO activity before it climbs the ranks?

There are currently 7 listings on the front page by the local maps for the keyword I'm targeting. Only one of those listing contains the actual keyword in it's name, and the others do not. The listing that I submitted DOES contain the targeted keyword in full, so I would expect it to rank higher than the others. Yes? No?

  • Never played around with it but I always thought that the ranking was determined by actual location for the search.

    So if you search for pizza in a city it will take a point from the center of the city and the rankings will be who is the closest.

    I could be wrong since I never really played with it but that is how I always thought it worked.
  • Hmmm....never thought about it that way but that would make sense I guess. The question is when you search for something so broad like "Phoenix pizza shops" how does google determine where in Phoenix to start or radiate the search from? IP address?

    • Ya they get your IP. Thats how they can let us target certain cities and such with Adwords. Google knows everything!

    • The nearest to the city center has an advantage.
      Google starts from that point.

  • I actually do this for local businesses. I get them in the top 10 or 7 box. Of course our main goal is the #1 spot. It's a service I offer. One of my clients is super happy. just Google " altamonte springs chiropractor" he's a chiropractor in florida that I work with. His site is roachchiro.com
