I've noticed that in google, my site is listed as MYSITE.COM, as opposed to WWW.MYSITE.COM...

More than 99% of my backlinks are directed at WWW.MYSITE.COM...

Will this effect the way I rank? And if so, how can I change this?

If you're site is hosted on an Apache server, then one way of redirecting MYSITE.COM to WWW.MYSITE.COM is by modifying the .htaccess file.

If you use a cpanel hosting account, then you can simply do a domain redirect so everything goes to http://www.

I've seen instances where Google was indexing double of everything that was on the same website, because of the www issue. The website got hit with a duplicate content penalty and fell out of the top 10 having a slow death.

Just do it to cover your basis.

Yup it is posssibel for this to cause you problems as essentially the non www and the www are different pages with the same content, this normally wouldnt be a problem as most people just get their links into one page, but since you seem to have links going to both, it would be a good idea to look into 301 redirecting one of ur pages, to the other so when people goto the non www page it redirects them to the www, or vice versa, it sounds hard but its not lol !

There are many tutorials out there on how to do this, it does depends on if ur hosting is on windows or linux too, so you might need to do a bit of research.

    • You definitely want to get this resolved as others have mentioned here. Since you have all your backlinks to "www" then you'll want to create the redirects others have mentioned here so that only the "www" resolves in the browser. If you are using WordPress, it will do this for you in the admin settings.

Another thing you'll want to do is setup an account with Google Webmasters. From there you can set what your preferred url is (www or no www) for Google.

        Thanks everyone...

I realized that in my wordpress settings I had it redirecting to the http://mysite...

I changed that. Then went into my cpanel and redirected the http://mysite to the www...

Then I also set my preference in google webmaster tools (i forgot I even signed up for it).

Let's see if anything changes. I've been ranking pretty well as is, so even if things stay pat, I will be happy.

I've noticed with most of my Wordpress sites that I can type in the www or not and it always seems to get there.

I'm all for dropping www's, colons, and maybe one of those t's as well.
