Seven Principles Before you even start with Search Engines

I found myself thinking today about newbies to SEO that I have encountered on Warriors. There are a lot of different questions (and various answers) to ask but I realized there are some guiding principles that have helped me greatly to rank sites.

So here are my seven principles in case anyone finds them useful

1) It starts with keyword research.

If you are starting with a website, a name or even a product then you are one step behind (Doesn't mean you can't catch up). Its about customers and if you are looking for search engine traffic then its about terms people look for. too many people start with something else besides keyword research and it kills them.

2) Do it fully or don't bother.

I encounter a lot of people who want and expect to be an overnight success. They do the things they should (write content , do a link building campaign et) for a few weeks and then give up. Search engine optimization is not a week or month project. If you aren't going to take a long term view then you shouldn't bother. You're building a work horse that makes money for you while you sleep so it takes time to get it going.

3) Its on page AND off page.

You have work to do on your site and on other sites promoting your site. Too often we talk about one over the other and people wrongly claim that one is all thats needed.

4) Follow whats known not what you heard.

I get into it sometimes on the forums because I will take what Google says or some researcher has proven any day over the latest claim made on forums. This is your potential livelihood ( you hope so at least) you are talking about. Would you risk your job to what you heard on some street corner?

5) Tests beat an opinion any day.

At first I hated it but now I love doing testing. Google is like chemicals in a test tube just sitting thre waiting for you to test it. Tell me another business market where you can get market research for the cost of a domain. Instead of floating my opinions about what will work I just get a domain and test it.

6) Don't ask for it to be too easy.

Savor the challenge. If you didn't have to do a little work and learning then there wouldn't be ANY opportunity. All the best careers and businesses take something to get going. People who want it to be as easy as clicking one button and thats it forget that if it were that easy too many buttons would be pushed to make it profitable for ANYONE anymore.

7) Tools make the tradesman.

By all means take the shortcuts when they don't take away from doing good work. Sure you can do everything by hand but over the years I've found some great tools - free and paid that make SEO life more rewarding. Don't be afraid to use them and if they cost something weigh the value and realize every good business has expenses.

I actually think if you take those approaches you are well on your way in SEO even if you think you are still wet behind the ears.

Yeah, there are a lot of people searching for "Mortgage Loans" but you better pass on that one if you are a small fish.

Definitely. Keyword research is a world of its own. traffic generation is so easy when you put together SEO with good keyword analysis. Like you said you can't expect to jump on the front page of Google overnight for a very competitive word but there are still tons of terms that get thousands of visits per month.

I'll compile a list but the free ones that everyone should be aware of are Google's Keyword tools, Webmaster toools and a backlink checker (variety of them including one by that exact name.)

Traffic isn't really a SEO factor directly but the more people who visit you the more likely you will get backlinks to your site naturally so you can in fact consider it as an indirect SEO factor. Traffic just refers to visitors to your site. For search engine optimization if your site is ranked high for a search term more people will visit you who are looking up those search terms.

    I am all about testing.

But what happens when your tests yield wildy unpredictable results? I am learning zero from my testing right now other than 'Google be crazy.'

Great post. I think a lot of establisehd marketeers could also appreciate this info. A do agree that you do need a LOT of willpower and focus. If you want to get into SEO then you have to for the long-haul, chances are you wont see any results for months, but boy, one you hit that top 10 (assuming you have targetted good keywords) then it all makes it worthwhile!

Thanks for that. Most people are lazy, so if you go the extra mile then it should pay off.

To add to all of this I think that it is equally important to never stop learning. SEO changes so much and if you do not adapt to changes within the search engines you will quickly get left behind. Don't get too comfortable with one method that worked for one site. Continue to learn and apply new methods and hold on to those that prove to be effective. You will never learn it all but the more you learn the better your chances are at being competitive in any niche that you choose.

thanks a lot Mike! seriously, whenever I see this 'sniper-site' nonsense where people rush off to capture 3 visits a day to make $14 a month on a site, I just ....

anyway, for me your points 5 and 6 are the top ones:
    - TEST, TEST and TEST again. Not just in your SEO, everything you do. And keep track of it, write down the test-results.
Ever heard the old "you must use the person's first name in the subject line to increase open-rates". Hell yeah, for some audiences that's true. For another audience my own testing showed that using the first name more than halved the open-rate.

    so, test.

and, the getting something for nothing point 6: in a way good for the rest of us. Whilst they're busy flipping $14 sniper-sites just because there is no competition, we can go about building up PR3,4 and 5 (ok, I've yet to build a PR5 site...) sites and enjoy front-page traffic for keywords that have thousands of exact searches every day....

right then, someone asked about free tools, here's a tip you may not have known about:

in google's keyword tool, click on the 'website content' button, but then don't enter a URL, but click on the link below the URL box (Or, enter your own text in the box below. (optional)) and enter your KW there.

brings up lovely long tail KW suggestions

    enjoy

Oh boy that one line can get me started. I am convinced that at least 60% of people in IM are chasing the nightmare of something for nothing or the whole business for $9.95 and 10 minutes a day lie. There are a number of people that wouldn't have any great interest in this thread because it isn't a ten points to $10,000 in ten days formula. the joke is they will spend the next ten years trying to find one that works and never will
