OK so I was checking my links today and around 1000 of them suddenly disappeared from my back link checkers. It seems like most of my forum links are gone but my article, blog and a few other types remained. Anyone else ever experience this?

What were you using to check them?

It's yahoo the siteexplorer. I too had the same problem and thought I messed up something first.

Siteexplorer today suddenly started to only show about half the backlinks then it usually did. I had this problem with all sites I checked before. About 10. My own and the ones of competing sites.

Noticed the same thing today. The problem is that most alternate tools rely on Yahoo for backlinks statistics.
Does anyone use a tool that doesn't rely on Yahoo?
Maybe this is a small blip and Yahoo will get it fixed soon enough. I sure hope it is.

Check out SEO Spyglass... from what I've heard it seems to be a little more accurate. There is a free and a paid version, the free one should suffice as far as I know for checking the amount of backlinks.

I have and use SEO Spyglas.. It too relies on Yahoo. just did a check from it and I see the same number of links as the now "downsized" Yahoo explorer shows.

I noticed Google dropped several hundred backlinks from one of my sites a couple of weeks ago. I think it has something to do with general housekeeping. Either the backlinks have a shelf life, or the bots go back over them after a period of time and remove any that are on archived pages, etc.

Yeah, I noticed it too. Today! From 900 dropped to only few hundreds... or it was the data before wasn't accurate enough and now only got fixed? Feel a little bit down for this.

Check where your links should be to see if they are still there.

I would say that you have posted comments on blogs with recent commenter or top poster plugins which gave you sitewide links. You are no longer on the list so the link doesn't exist.

These plugins will give you a huge but worthless boost in backlinks as they are gone before you know it.

It sounds to me like just some downtime for some links coming through yahoo site explorer. That has happened to me a few times over the last month (checking via spyglass).

Oh come on people! it happens all the time, if you are still ranking stop watching those links, because search engines are still seeing them so don't worry !

if you dropped then you should e worried about your backlinks but as long as you are still there is noting to be afraid of

Hamza... it's not an isolated incident... I believe we are trying to pinpoint what happened with the MASSIVE drop in links across the board.

Something's up to have this many scrubbed.

    Warmly,
