Keyword Searches per Month

Before you started anything, with all your keywords combined, how many searches per month did you calculate to want to have?

I have started my first project and so far I've come up with keywords that could yield me 7000 searches per month.

Should I set a bigger number to achieve by getting more keywords so I don't hit a quick limit to how much money I'll be making?

Can you guys tell me how many searches per month you were looking at with the keywords you got before you started your projects?

To determine how many searches per month you want to target you first need to ask yourself an important question.

How much money do you want to make and how are you going to turn this traffic into cash.
For example...If you are selling a product for $20 and your goal is to make $5000 a month then you will need to make 250 sales per month. If you product converts about 1% of your traffic to sales then you will need about 25000 visitors per month.

    25000 * 1% = 250*$20 per sale = $5000

Is using 1% conversion in my theoretical calculation before I start anything too much? Its a reasonable number...right?

Looks like I'm going to have to find more keywords.

      My goal is also 5k+/month.

I look for 10 million searches. Make sure they're EXACT searches though.

    Sike!

but anything above 5k EXACT searches for me. The lowest I've ever gone was 2400 and that's it.

When you say exact, do you mean allintitle or under quotes?

I usually try to target at least 1000-3000 searches a month. Upwards of 3000 is optimal but sometimes there are a ton of low competition 1000 keywords I can rank for. It can also get kinda tricky when global counts are a lot different. I would recommend crosschecking your numbers with a few different tools before you get started. I use the exact results in quotes.

7,000 is pretty good if it is exact. Remember, even the no.1 spot will only get a percentage of those. That keyword will also be for your main index page right? So if you add more pages, each targeting other keywords so essentially you could just keep increasing targeted traffic to your site.

For my main keyword, I'm usually looking in the 3-6K exact match range. All other keywords, I'll look between 1K-6K.

    Hi...

I'll give the un-sexy answer: it really depends.

The amount of montly searches that is allowable should change from niche to niche.

For instance, if you are targeting a niche like "weight loss" where most of the purchases are less than $50, you want a higher amount of monthly searches.

However, if you were dealing in a niche like "forex", where the average purchase is around $100-$200, you would be able to get away with less monthly traffic.

    Does that make sense?

If the average profit you will be making is quite high (greater than $100), you would be able to still profit even with substandard numbers in terms of monthly searches.

    Just my 2 cents.
