QUESTION - If you had 100 pages of unique content, would you do one mega site, or 5 niche sites?

Thanks for reading my post.

So i have enough content for 100 posts at about 800 words a piece.

The question I face is, should I make 1 mega site, with 4 branches on the tree. For example:

MyProblems.com
- Hearing Problems (25 posts)
- Ear Problems (25 posts)
- Brain Problems (25 posts)
- Eye Problems (25 posts)

Or should I divide the content across 4 websites - each with their own domain name.

Hearing Problems.com (25 posts)
Ear Problems.com (25 posts)
Brain Problems.com (25 posts)
Eye Problems.com (25 posts)

The goal is to get the most adsense money.

All things being equal, which paradigm wil get more money after a year?

Thanks!

Getting your Keyword in the domain name and having your site tightly themed on one topic will make it easier to rank well for the Keyword.

If it were up to me in the situation described, I would make individual sites and link them together,

I would recommend setting up wordpress sites. It is easy to add your content and update later. Plus it is easy to intergrate social media and get indexed by the blog search engines to get othe sources of traffic.

This is how I would do it, for sure.

As you are ready to grow, I would also suggest going for 4 different sites. But remember, managing and optimizing a single site is much easier than managing and equally optimizing 4 different sites. However, contradictory, you have the advantage with you of deciding which site rakes in more revenue and you can stick to that in future.

Choice is yours... All the best!

I've actual done both business models so let me give you a few tips.

If all the content is related to one particular subject, I like to make one big authority website. If the content is spread out among different niches, then I like to make individual sites.

Another thing to remember is what your goal for the website is? Is it getting free SEO traffic? Is it flipping the website to make quick cash? Is it a long term authority style site that will be around for years?

First decide what your goal for the website is, then build accordingly. I like to do all sorts of business models, everything from mini affiliate marketing website to major traffic generating authority websites. Decide what's right for you at this point and move forward accordingly, good luck.

I'd have to agree with Scott.

If you're thinking long term you should go for one main authority website.

I don't really understand why people would want to increase the number of sites when the content is related and can be put into one. I guess it is a reflection of the kind of backlinks you aim to get.

If you're getting backlinks from the ususal strategies.. you should go for different websites as they'll be easier to rank.

if you're getting good quality links such as guest posts.. you should go for an authority site as you will spending quite a bit of time getting the links. In this model however, you are almost guaranteed a top rank after a few months which will stay in the long term with little management.

I personally prefer one large authority site to several mini-sites. For one, they are much easier to market. With mini-sites, you constantly need to build links. An authority site, on the other hand, will probably get linked to a lot on its own accord (because of its authority)

Moreover, a large site makes for much easier (and better) flips. A site making $1k/month can easily be flipped for $6-10k. You would be hard pressed to find similar ROI on mini-sites

I would make one mega site for the following reasons:

1 - Internal linking structure builds authority faster (link keywords to the internal pages they relate to)
2 - All external link-building goes to the same domain, which provides a ripple effect to all of your keywords you are link-building. Much more juice per link this way.
3 - Google prefers larger sites in a niche category. Since this would fit in "health" I would say it can become a niche health authority site.

Of course if were me I would use WPMU and make each a subdomain and cross link all my keywords to the other subdomain blogs.

Theres a good argument for making one authority site. Al the link juice you build from the various campaigns flow through the one site. However my issue is that the myproblems.com is just a generic example the OP is giving. If he can find a targeted domain that can wrap itself around all those smaller niches then its viable . If not then depending on keyword competitive analysis he might be better going for seperate sites that can be be more specifically targeted.

Scott - you hit the nail on the head. I personally would like to take the one mega-site...but it looks like your topics are different, so I would go w/ five different sites.

Providing that the niches are closely related enough I'd definitely cast my vote in favor of one big authority site. Easier to maintain, less total backlinking required, and ultimately more likely to stick around under Google's ever-changing algorithm.

gave up building mini sites long time ago... they were good earners back then when the competition was still low but now it's all in pennies compared to what i get now from authority sites... on top of that G kept knocking them off.. so i figured that 10 niche sites' earnings were earning same amount as 1 authority site. You need a lot of time to promote them and I'm a guy who doesn't trust outsourcing so i see better rewards with channeling same amount of energy building one big authority site. it's a painful and slow journey but the cheque is heavy.

The answers given here for doing one mega site are very good.
I would only add one that was only touched on in passing.

It is dang time consuming to even do 5 sites. Doing one
site seems to me to be the best way. Put all your time into
one site is much more practical than trying even to juggle more.

So one site would get my vote.

The flips side, is how good of sites could you make if you split it
up? If you could make 5 stand-alone sites, needing very little
maintenance, that may be the way to go.

But link building would still take 5 times as much effort.

        Cool

        thanks for all the input.

I decided to build a megasite.

Not because I think it will be more profitable, but because I currently don't have one anymore.

So its more of an experiment.

        Here's my personal theory though:

I still don't know the answer to my original question. But, since, by Google's own admission, they will value sights that have earned "authority" more than those that haven't. Assumidly, here, they are referring to a large site that has been online long enough to have a human reviewer look at it a few times, over a few years, and give it a human thumbs up in Google's database.

So ideally, if someone planned on making money via internet for a while, they should make an earnest effort to build a network of mega sites -- as opposed to always building niche after niche after niche.

One thing that I heard was that Google is going to start penalizing sites that are linked together that are registered under the same DNS. I guess there purpose is to discourage people from making junk sites and linked together. When I heard about this I decided to just make one megasite instead of many. Hope that helps

I think you need to research what DNS is.

I think I know what you assume it is. But think. There are a few domain
companies that host thousands of websites. So, if by "DNS" you mean
hosting company, how can you avoid links on sites you don't know are
on the same company as you?

But here's something. Take any 2 websites. Somewhere down the line they
are probably on the same DNS. The odds are greatly in that favor.

I assume you mean like I said first. Too many domains on the same host.
Not a problem. Never has been, never will be. If it were, godaddy would
            be go-baby!

I have never bought the idea that a dedicated server is worth it for what
we are discussing here in this part of the forum. And that would not solve
the true "DNS" problem as presented. And I don't even want to get into
            DHCP.

I would look to use both models as well. For quick cash you probably want to go for the small niche sites as it can bring in revenue quick and allow you to spend the money earnt on a larget authority site.

If you have an old domain which is a few years old then it might be worth you just going straight in at the deep end and building a mega site.

    Good luck
