    Hey pldata..'

I still think that most keyword tools don't offer you true results..
They tend to be very erratic at the best of times. I have always used googles keyword tool and have found it gives me the best results...

Plus Google is a very powerful FREE tool..

By the way here is a great keyword research tutorial I got here on the Warrior forum you should take a look at...

    Market Research - Vendiva.com - Frank Haywood

    I hope this helps...

Well there are many free tools available nowadays. But the best one is adwords from Google. You can try this. It's easy to use and provides efficient data.

    Hi Pldata,

Honestly, one of the most time consuming task is keyword
research, and before that you must also give time to Niche Research.

The truth about doing your niche research plus keyword research
in just a few minutes isn't true, even with tools you'll still take 5 to 10 minutes
at the least to check 20 to 30 keywords for competition.

Also, one of the most reliable keyword research tool for me is Google's,
simply because they own the search engine where people do search.

However, some of their figures could be a bit bloated due to the fact that
a lot of people are using their search engine for keyword research, it actually
adds up to the search performed.

Here's a decent way to do your niche research + keyword research.
Actually what I'm going to tell you is what I did a few hours ago
after a friend asked me for a possible niche.

    1. Niche Research: (super fast technique)

I was asked by a friend, he was wondering what niche we could go into.
What immediately came to mind was the "desperate" niche. So what I
did was think of a "desperate" niche. After I thought of one, I immediately
went to Amazon's bestsellers list to check if there was a best selling product
for the "desperate" niche. Luckily there was and not just one.

So, it proved that there is a "buying" demand in the niche.

    2. Keyword Research:

What I did next is go to Google's External Keyword Tool and
feed in the keyword phrase describing the "desperate" niche.

It returned a list of phrases. I saved it in CSV format and
then analyzed each one. First I removed the keywords with
searches lower than 2000 per month.

So I was left with about 30 keyword phrases, the next thing I
did was analyze the competing pages for each phrase.

I checked "broad" competition, "exact" competition, "all in title"
and "all in url". I did that in about 5 minutes because I have a
    tool.

Then I looked for keyword phrases with low "exact", "all in title"
and "all in url" competition and highlighted it. (less than 50k competition)

I noted the keywords and sent the results to my friend telling
him that those are interesting keywords.

So, that was basically it. It took me about 10 minutes or more because
I have the tool. However, if you do it manually, it would probably take
you from 30 minutes to 1 hour.

There's one more thing missing in this instruction. You should still
check the strength of the competition for each of the keywords.
The fastest way to do this is via Yahoo's site explorer. It gives
you the backlinks for each site.

Another way to also gauge the strength of competition is by checking
the page rank. Though Google claims it no longer values page rank, it
is still a fast indicator of how strong a site is. The higher the pagerank
the harder it is to unseat it in the search results.

I hope I was able to help you through this post.

    All the best,

Thanks for the link Tas. That's a great video, and very helpful. I've also found a lot of really good stuff in the Eric's Tips lessons. There's a lot more besides keywords, but might be useful for pldata as well. (Sorry I can't post the link because I don't have enough posts, but Google works. It's ericstips.com, go to Lessons. They're all free.

Here's a way too in order to determine your main keyword:

      a.) Prune your list to the best, most relevant (10 to 15) keywords in your list. So, look at your keyword list AND remove those that are not too closely relevant;

b.) Keyword Popularity: Use Google Keyword tool to determine the estimated search volumes of your keyword list. Select "exact" (under 'match type') and also select "only show ideas closely related to my search terms".

c.) Sort the Results by the highest to lowest search volumes (or vice versa). You can see in the generated table which has the highest search volumes.

d.) Spot Your Main Keyword: Make the keyword with highest search volume your primary keyword which is the most relevant of those with the highest search volumes.

e.) Pick your top 3 to 5 keywords (for a post between 300 to 500 word length). The keywords popularity will give you a clue here - pick the top 3 to 5 with highest search volumes.

    hi!

Keyword tools offer to much irrelevant keywords. What works best for me is researching with adwords. While buying ads in adwords, you will have a great opportunity to check what particular keywords are converting for you and what bring just non-quality traffic for you. Be sure to take some time to distinguish really good converting keywords which to use when doing your SEO.

Thanks, some great detail here. I start with G. kwd tool, then for the most part with market samurai, and a final check with MNF...but now after reading everyone's approach, I have to rethink a few things here...
