Hx Tages and SEO

Is it still important to have my title in an h1 tag? If so, does it hurt me to give it the display:inline style so that it doesn't mess up my header?

Another question: do my subheaders need to be h2, then h3 etc.? I kind of like the size of h4.

  Thank you very much. Does it matter if my h1 tag is at the top of the page for seo purposes? I'd like to put my header lower down on my subpages.

  Again, you can use CSS to control the layout of any element on your page.
  
  I recommend that you create your content using headings where you would logically expect to find them in your content. Then use your stylesheet to control how that content gets displayed.

  Thanks, dburk. What My website is a simple table, with a colspan 2 header, then a thick column with content and a sidebar, then a footer.
  
  If I put my h1 title in the thick column with all my content, does that hurt my seo?
