How long does it take for your backlinks to really matter? That is, I have some pages which I have built lets say, 77 backlinks too. Google see's the backlinks, the page is indexed yet it's WAY DOWN in the results for it's term even though it's not a competitive term.

Is this being sandboxed? I used some of my own sites for backlinks, but also other links so I'm not sure what Google wants.

My brother had an SEO company (Swagger?) which was working on a site for him. They took the entire domain down and got another with a different I.P. cuzz they said Google sandboxed them or something.. I fear I am too. Or is this just the dance, new websites do?

  • Your site is probably ranking exactly where it should based on the quality and quantity of links that it has.

    The solution is to get mo' better links.
  • How do you tell if your website is being sandboxed? How do you tell if it is being indexed at all yet?

    On my site, a search for my domain does not come up with my site. Searching site:domain comes up with a nothing found page.

    • If it's the site in your sig, yes, it isn't indexed yet. It's relatively new and financial keyword domains tend to be slow indexing. You'll need to get some additional links, such as your sig here, and it should get indexed soon enough.
  • As long as you can see your website in the SERP you are not in sandbox but probably in a Google dance. Google dance happens when you do too much backlinking with an aged website. With a new website, that usually lands you in the sandbox

    • Google Sandbox is the term used to refer to Google's testing environment for developers testing Google Checkout service and there is also a iGoogle Sandbox for testing.

      What you seem to be asking about is what is often referred to as the "Sandbox Effect". The "Sandbox Effect" is simply the result of Google applying the principle of ranking pages that have stood the test of time higher because they have earned a degree of trust.

      It is not a place your website goes nor a penalty. There is nothing you can do to cause it, so there is nothing you need to do to avoid it. Maintaining your web pages and promotional efforts over a period of time is the only way to overcome it.

      Google ranks your web page in the SERP based on relevance, not the number of backlinks. You could have a million backlinks and not rank for terms that aren't relevant to your backlinks or page content.

      Your backlinks are important in how they influence your relevancy score. 77 backlinks that don't improve your relevancy score have the same effect as no backlinks at all. Learn how to use backlinks to improve your relevancy if you want to use them to improve your SERP rankings.

    • sorry, that's not right. Sandbox is a ranking penalty, you would find your site in SERPs, but way behind. If its not in the index its not sandboxed, but simply not indexed or de-indexed.
  • According to me there is nothing to worry. You can continue backlink building but you can slow down the process. Also you can try adding some more original content. If you get some backlinks through some other way then it will work well. Once it happened with me too but within one month site came up to #1 page. No need to change the IP.
  • Quick question on building the backlinks. When posting comments on blogs, do you just need your website in the website box or do you need it in the actually comments box for it to count?

    Also, so non relevant links don't count at all? I thought I had read they just didn't count as much. So far this has been my only link that is not in a stock market forum, or blog that had an article about finance or stock.

      I assume that when you say "website" you are referring to the backlink, which is madeup of two parts, the URL and the anchortext. It varies based on the blog platform. You need to place your web page URL in the "website box", this could be any page on your website that you happen to be promoting.

      If you want any ranking benefit, then you need to make your backlink relevant to your targeted keyword. The best way to do this is by having the anchortext include your targeted keyword term. Keep in mind that most blog platforms use the "nofollow" attribute on links in blog comments, which removes all SEO value.

      When you ask if irrelevant backlinks count, yes they count as backlinks, they may count towards your PR score, they just don't help you rank for your targeted keyword. Irrelevant backlinks have very little value since the do virtually nothing to help you get traffic to your web pages. You can use them as part of a more sophisticated strategy, but you must execute that strategy properly to see any real benefit.
  • How much competitin do you have when you use the 'allintitle' search in Google?

    Is your site jumping from a high rank to a low rank? If it is, you could expect it to settle back at the higher page rank, however, this could take months.

    • Google has thousands of databases and they don't all get updated with the same data at the same time. Therefore, when a site or page is first indexed, it may not always show up in results because of the databases selected out of the 'cloud' to feed the query.

      BTW, the site in question, assuming it's the one in the OP's sig, is now showing 258 pages indexed in Google.

  • There is one thing that allot people do not understand. Google sandbox do not influence the whole website. Depending on the keywords value ( traffic, competition ) sandbox will influence you keyword rankings different if at all.
  • I don't like the term sandbox, I wouldn't worry about that.

    It's just going to take some time to move your site up in ranking. Sites aren't based just on backlinks, it has to have a lot of unique content as well. And be established for at least a year or two to start moving up.
