Serious Question About Backlinks

Out of curiosity, if you were to subscribe to a backlinking service (automated, not a list like Angela's Backlinks) and found out your site was being linked on porn sites, would you be upset?

The only assumption is that YOUR site is NOT in the "adult" niche.

I wouldn't want my sites linked to porn, which is why I'd never put my link-building in anyone else's hands (unless it was someone else using the links I was providing for them).

simple..i would demand my money back. This would probably be my LEAST concern, because porn, gambling, drugs etc. are considered "bad neighbourhoods", you basically paid for getting penalized by Google.

        Hi MJM

There's another big problem with non-relevant links - quite apart from the dislike of porn sites (Agreed).

Recently there have been products promoting how to place links (in the guise of comments) on non-relevant, do follow, high PR blogs etc all over the internet.

But this approach, while temporarily working for SEO and rankings, completely misses the huge, precision-niche-targeted block of traffic that comes to your site via a link because they like what you have written.

Dumping non-relevant 'trash links' in blog comments can actually work for a while for SEO, but in the end these types of links lack the power of links you put on RELEVANT blogs. It may improve rankings for a while, but when people in a niche see a comment on a blog that is obviously unrelated they are not going to follow it over to your website.

Google also eventually catches up to the fact that the link is not relevant and drops the site from the rankings. They are getting cleverer each day at finding these trash links.

Bottom line is that the crude idea of placing links all over the internet just to get backlinks to impress Google and get a lift in Search rankings is at best a temporary tactic, and will not build a business that will continue to produce traffic over the long term.

PS. I've just made a 3 minute mini TV program explaining this subject. (See Signature for the URL)

I'm starting to see that. I know alot of folks disagree with what your saying, but I'm quickly becoming a believer in that relevance does come into play at some point in the game. Thanks for the info, Sir!

you mean unsavvy sites link to your site? I believe there is no ranking penalty for that.. but it definitely tarnish your brand.. so I would not want that happens to my sites either.. I also advice against buying auto linking service

safe back-linking service, inexpensive and effective!

    Authority Bookmarks WSO

Not my service, though I use them
    not an affiliate link

will also take you an article directory the does 150 backlinks to every article submitted to it (non of them porn)
as well as access to an article spinner that is (in my opinion) the best and only non re-write every article) spinner

    why spin?
articles can be used with minor changes as:
    audio-pods (which RSS picks up)
    videos
    reports
combined and made books out of
    press releases
    web pages
    blog replies
    blog posts
guest posts at blogs in your niche
    forum posts
and the list goes on and on
One article written and spun properly can dominate every medium searched on the net
and will probably work for media we cannot imagine that has yet to be used.
every use, adds back links to your site. a good article can create thousands of back-links and funnel traffic from the sites that specialize in that media , as well

I am aware at this point, duplicate articles suffer no penalty nor even ignoring by the majority of SE's. so today, an article may not even need to be spun at all to use them in all these ways

however, what the SEs decide to do in the future is anybodies guess (though it is difficult to imagine that they would ever penalize or put on a supplemental index for duplicate content as that would be the end of syndication which most of the mainstream media (news, comics, political commentary etc) rely so heavily on.

Spinning also has the advantage of not being completely boring your reader/watcher/listener by allowing them to hear/read/watch the same information in different words so that they
A-do not associate the articles with the same writer
    &
B-hear/watch/listen to essentially the same information which appears to come from different sources which re-enforces it's validity.

    Very Upset.

I'd suggest you contact help desk and or make sure you've set proper parameters regarding the genre of sites that are acceptable as backlinks.

    Good luck

Could you point me in the right direction in cPanel how to block sites from backlinking to me? I'd really appreciate it

          Hi MJM

There's a big school of thought that says it's OK to stick junk links in blogs on .edu domains etc. 'Fair game' they say.

Sure, sure, I have to admit that I'm not against taking advantage of loopholes, but seriously, if you want to build a solid business, its a good idea to build it on rock, not sand. Poor linking in unrelated neighborhoods in the end doesn't make sense - but it no doubt works for a quick fix!

FYI. Yesterday I found this fabulous article by Ken McCarthy on postings, links and establishing a solid position in Google search results instead of trying to 'game' the system.

"Jiggling the Web for Instant Search Engine Rankings'

This is clever stuff from a real expert.

          Hope it helps

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I've resolved the issue to my satisfaction with the WSO member (he was very cool about it). My only concern at this point is how to get rid of what's already there...

Yes I would be upset and would ask to have them removed right away and even a possible refund. I make sure anyone I outsource to sends me a full detailed report of where they backlinked my site. You do need to be careful what sites backlink to yours or Google may get the wrong impression.

I would, Remember, your reputation is on the line. Now unless you are running a porn site, then I don't see a problem with it. If you are not, then yes I wouldn't want any of it's juices touching or spilling on my site. Not to get to dirty though.

First of all, a few links with appropriate anchor text from a few porn sites won't hurt you at all. You're basically worrying about something that's not a problem. Remember that it's your outgoing links that can cause you problems with Google, not your incoming links since you have no control over them.

That said, if you had 1000's upon 1000's of incoming links from porn sites using porn related anchor text this might cause your site to start ranking for these terms. You probably wouldn't want this because it would bring you junk traffic. What's worse is that your site might get flagged as being a porn site and be subject to adult filtering by various protection programs like Barracuda and NetNanny.

If they were majority porn I would demand a refund but if it's just a few than it shouldn't hurt you. The Dangers of automation.

I also don't use other people's services for backlinking. But if you have to outsource to someone doing this, make sure part of their services includes providing you with complete list of sites that they use to link to you after the job's done. It still isn't foolproof but this way it seems more trustworthy.

What if somebody, your competitors maybe launch this to your site? Will Google track this? "aha... his/her competitors are doing this.. I won't penalize this site."

This is might be your answer or might be a question for all of us.

P.s: Just play safe by not being their neighborhood, I don't want strip dancers dancing next to my door :p

Yes I would be upset, I'd not only cancel the service, but ask for a refund.

I've found that outsourcing backlinks is a lot more difficult then many people expect, at least it has been in my experience.

I try to stay out of bad neighborhoods whenever possible.
