Any recommended SEO training sites?

HI Guys,

I am new to the forum and have bought a few courses in Internet Marketing. Does anyone have any views on SEO courses and training online with a reputable and respected organisation?

It seems to be a minefield out there on the net with individuals offering the world or providing poor quality training once you sign up!

If anyone has gained real life solid SEO training and skills and applied them to their work or business, i would be most greatful for their feedback.

I have come across SEObook which seems to be very expensive and SEOMOZ again not sure if they offer training or just software services?

Also is there a SEO certification that is recognised by the internet community?

Cheers Guys,

Gavin

    I'll teach you.

    On-page SEO + Off-page SEO

    On-page SEO:
make sure you have the KW in your title in h1, in your meta description and also try to get KW density anywhere between 5-10%. Try to have good inner linking system (in content is better than sidebar links).

    Off-page SEO:
Vary your backlinks, try to go tender with new sites, go rapidly with older sites. Get 10 PR 6 backlinks, then get 100 PR 0 backlinks just for good measure (example). Use anchor text but vary that with your URL as well.

    Any other question?

      HI,

Wow thanks. I really appreciate that.

I think i understand the terminology and will make notes. Would it be possible to communicate in email aswell if that is a possibility? Or do you prefer to stick to the forum. If so could i leave a note here and there for you to read at your leisure?

I have an older website that is 2 years old and a newer one 1 month old that i can SEO as much as i like. Will apply those techniques and keep you posted.

One last question did you learn natural SEO self taught and by helpful Guys like yourself or did you orgionally sign up for SEO courses and go from there?

      Many thanks,

      Gavin

Do not sign up for any courses, and especially don't give anyone money that PMs you from out of the blue on here. A lot of people like to make money on newbies looking for that "One great big perfect SEO course that won't fail". Guess what, there is none. You're better off reading forums, testing things for yourself like everyone else, and learning as you go. If you do anything else you'll be wasting time and money. Nobody really wants to share ALL their secrets, otherwise there's no return business for them. Keep that in mind and go your own way. I've never spent a dime on anything other than domains and hosting. Good luck.

Well, it really depends on what you're doing. If you are a traditional internet marketer so to speak that's going on the niche website model, internet communities like warriorforum are all you'll ever need.

On the other hand, if you want to learn more corporate type seo, you can always go with the big guys: Stompernet, SEOMoz, SEM Mastery from Jerry West.

My biggest breakthroughs though, have always come from what I learned by taking action and experimenting. I mean for most people and most cases in the end it boils down to backlinks. It's just as simple as that. The courses that I consumed over time were valuable in the sense that they gave me a good outlook on what I was doing. In terms of actual real seo training, I just started offering some small scale services for local businesses and I clearly remember some solid videos from SEOMoz that helped.

I think there is a lot of really good info out there directly from Google, Yahoo and others in regards to on page factors.

As for backlinks (off page) my advice would be to select a few places to start and learn everything you can on this forum:

    Article Marketing
    Social Bookmarking
    Web 2.0
    Podcast
    Video
    Profile Links

When I first got started I spent way, way too much time trying to learn how to do things perfectly. Looking back if I would have simply started working on a few of the backlink types that were the easiest for me (article marketing for example) I'd be better off today.

Be careful what you read. It's mostly bad advise. I read everything I could and bought lots of ebooks for 2 years AND EARNED NOTHING!!!

Then I got smart and started experimenting on my own. Now I make money.

SEO is over-rated. I have many 1st page Google websites. Backlinks are the key.

      glefleur,

I'm going to disagree with people who have said just read forums to learn SEO. Forums can be great places to get an overview of whats involved in SEO but the problem is on even a good forum like this there are always people posting all kinds of ideas.

Getting some training from an authoritative source isn't the bad idea its being made out to be. Cringer made an excellent reference to Google's training and SEOmoz and SEO book are nice places too. Sure in some of those places you pay but the signal to noise level can be alot better for you. Just following one piece of bad advice from a poster who doesn't know what he is talking about can be far more expensive.

Definitely agree with the above post. Sure, forums can be a great place to start learning the basics about SEO and link building but if you really want some heavy duty material on tested and proven SEO tactics and strategies then I recommend you go and find a suitable paid course.

To get you started here's some free SEO material that you can use:

    1. http://www.seomoz.org/files/articles...timization.doc
    2. http://www.google.com/webmasters/doc...rter-guide.pdf
    3. SEOmoz | The Web Developer's SEO Cheat Sheet
    4. Search Engine Optimization : SEO Book.com
    5. Google/SEO

      Gavin,

I totally understand what you're talking about. It's definitely a minefield out there when it comes to seo information and who to learn from. I went through the same thing before I learned how to do seo myself.

Let me share from my own experience...

I began doing seo in the early days when submitting to the search engines was the way to get your website indexed in the search engines and there were search engines like Lycos and Excite still around.

So I've been doing this for a little while now. I am mostly self taught learning and doing as I go. I've purchased a couple courses in my early days which helped me get the foundation on seo and led me in the direction of really really doing it effectively.

I applied what I had learned and studied, so I do know what works and what doesn't work. Definitely real life experience skill set.

Here are some words of advice:
      • There is no right way of doing seo, just the wrong way. You see there are many... I guess systematic ways of doing seo, there are different techniques and strategies when combined that give you results. Most importantly is knowing what not to do because to avoid getting penalized is also part of doing seo.
      • Develop a good foundation of the basics. Understanding the fundamentals and knowing how and why they work will take you a long way.
      • Don't take everything you read or hear as truth. Learn the information and then test it. Testing is the only way to verify its validity.
      • Start with the basic fundamentals and master them. Because all too often I see many websites where the basic stuff is done wrong or not done effectively and they wonder why they're not getting results. Get the basics right then when you apply the more advance stuff they work a whole lot better.

Mike Anthony and lanta99 have given some good input as well and pointed in the right direction for starters.

Ok, that's my 2 cents worth. If there's any other questions just shoot me a message I'm glad to help.

      Cheers

    Bringing up old thread..

But I guess no harm in it.

Just wondering, I stumbled across this a minute ago:

Stomping the Search Engines 2.0 Digital SEO Course | StomperNet

Is it any good? Would like to know if the information within it is still any good for today's competitive SEOs.

I don't like the idea of subscribing even for $1 to something that will auto subscribe me every months (am referring to The Net Effect).

The Warrior Forum is your best SEO training site...go to "search" and type in "on page seo", or "build backlinks" or "how to seo". Whatever you need I can GUARANTEE you that you'll find what you're looking for right here.

Maybe look into buying a WSO or two, there's some very powerful AND knowledgeable Warriors spilling their guts in there.

There's a bunch of free backlinks in my sig...Maybe if you implement a few of those you'll see some better SERPS and a nice MORAL boost.

What makes it challenging for the creators of the courses and books is that the world of seo is always changing. So its easy for everyone to say, ignore the books, ignore the courses, save your money, and just google it...and they are probably right.

      Hi glefleur,

A few years ago when I was new to the SEO industry I took a 2 day online SEO Training class that was excellent - it brought me up-to speed.

Now after a few campaigns and more experience in SEO under my belt I simply keep-up with the latest trends via popular forums and blogs.

But depending on your needs I would recommend the guys I took my SEO Training from. AperioTraining.com

Learning SEO is pretty simple, I made a couple of guides on the basic steps to do on my blog. It basically boils down to finding keywords that are searched and that you can rank for, building a website targetting those keywords (on page SEO), building backlinks that target those keywords (off page SEO).
