Blog or new site option - which is better for SEO purposes?

I listened to a video on making a blog using wordpress. It is more complicated than a website builder I have. With that being said:
Can I get just as good SEO results creating a new website riding on a keyword domain which is related to the main website I am going to link the new website too as I can creating a blog linked to the main website?
So the new website would have the same pages on it as I would put on a blog if I were using that, but the only difference is that the pages are going on a separate website which has its own related keyword domain instead of the blog being subdomained to the site?
Would I need to connect each page of the new website to the main website to give it the same effect as a blog that is technically connected to the main site? What is the best way of linking those pages from one site to the other if the new site option is used instead of a blog?
